After work today I decided to hike in the Refuge before it closes. The trails are still open although some will be closed soon to allow for nesting birds. The protected osprey have all flown to South America. I caught a glimpse of a blue heron and a white egret today. Some turtles bathed in the sunlight of a somewhat chilly day. The lilly pads are dominating the lake and it will soon be drained to protect the undergrowth. The deer were active as well. There were few people, and the wildlife senses this. The songbirds sang beautifully. As I hiked from the meadow to the woods the smells changed. It was an earthy wonderful smell. Wild mushrooms were plentiful and colorful.(as a rule, treat all wild mushrooms as if poisonous) Several trees have slowly given in to the cool and show off their colors, as if to say "I'm first for the people to see". Others seemed to give up and fall to the ground, but still the scent was wonderful. The Virginia Pines are plentiful and are fragrant. What a potpourri of fragrances and natural beauty. Even the poison ivy has beautiful berries that the wildlife partakes in. What I love about the trail is the terrain changes, and every time I hike, its all new to me again. I probably could have walked in the neighborhood this afternoon, but it is not the same. How fortunate to have such beauty so close. In the Refuge , they leave the fallen trees alone where they fall (unless blocking a path) This is a natural cycle and all the wildlife benefits from the rotting wood. From insects, birds to squirrels. I know as my schedule is busy now ,I will not be able to be there as much as I would like, but that makes me appreciate it all the more. This is my favorite time of year. Just the change in temperature, color, smells, gives out new energy. Have a wonderful evening and week! Peace PlayList&p=83FCF3E50C4C0963&index=0&playnext=1
