I just caught this post on the Colorado Message Board Posted by our LadyIrish409...... Thank you for the share !
“Friend, you cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. And what one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government can’t give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody. And when half of the people get the idea they don't have to work because the other half’s going to take care of them, and when the other half get the idea it does no good to work because somebody’s going to get what I work for. That, dear friend, is about the end of any nation.”
I took the liberty of rearranging what LadyIrish409 posted... here is how she prefaced the quote in her blog:
There’s an Adrian Rogers quote floating around cyberspace. Perhaps you have received it? Though Dr. Rogers said it in 1984, his words are so relevant to what we are facing in America today. In fact, it was even read and posted in the Congressional Record by Congressman Steve King from the state of Iowa on January 14, 2009. Dr. Rogers is quoted:

Two words on a fair tax: Flat Tax, 15%, everybody pays, no exemptions.
....when half of the people get the idea they don't have to work because the other half’s going to take care of them This is what people say every time someone mentions that there are people who can't work and who are dying without health care and still working.
Have you seen the unemployment numbers lately? Where are all those folks supposed to find work? There are hundreds of thousands, millions I suspect, who have steady jobs but either their employer offers no health care or it is so expensive they can't afford it or their co-pays are t0o high or the insurance is so lousy no doctor will take it so they can't use the insurance they have.
What about older workers standing in line with a crowd of young applicants? Will they get the job? How about the hundreds of thousands of women whose husband abandoned them with no money, no child support, no way to feed and clothe their kids, no child care to allow them to work? Then there's the victims of abuse who grow up to be drug abusers and alcoholics who never had a chance as a kid and have less chance as an adult? What about the war vets so screwed up in the head they are not able to stand still long enough to hold any job?
I tell you what. If I could find a job that pays a decent wage at my age, with my ailments (undiagnosed because no health care) that I could do at all I'd give half of my salary away to people who need it. I don't want a hand out but I sure wish I could do some handing out. Why don't people who keep saying silly things like the quote above just admit they do not care for the poor and do not want them to survive if they can't do the menial, low wage tasks required to keep the rich from having to cook, clean, wash, or worry about having to lift a finger themselves.
How about this? A flat tax of 15% for government with 1% designated to providing help to people who can not help themselves?
When a man approaches me wearing ragged clothes and needing a bath on the street and asks for help I do not give him a lecture on work, ask for his resume, demand a receipt. I give him ten bucks, even if it's my last ten bucks. If caring for others makes you a sucker then I can paint that on my forehead. If there's a need and I can help, that is my responsibility as a human being. There's nothing I need or want so badly that it's worth having if someone else has to suffer for me to get it.
The end of our nation does not come with a welfare state. The end of our nation came long ago when we as Americans stopped caring about people who have nothing.

And forgive me here folks... this is one reason I haven't allowed all comments before.... and that's because of the RULES... BLOGS ARE NOT TO BE USED AS FORUMS
But yes..dharmaseeker.... I do, in fact see all of this ON A DAILY BASIS!!! As I work at the our local workforce center... dealing with these issues.
The sadness of our affairs does not change the reality of this quote. Nor am I saying that reform is not needed. There will be no "quick fix" and we'd all better be careful of anyone trying to offer one.

I can agree entirely with your conclusion. The only fix is ending our obsession with greed. Unemployment is high because companies worry more about their bottom line than they do their employees. In this town the major industry laid off several hundred workers while complaining that their profit was down to only eleven million! They had the nerve to allow both stories to be in the paper almost side by side. A fraction of that profit would have paid all the salaries of those workers.
But then there's our personal greed that keeps us from helping those who need help before they get in line at the welfare office.
I was a welfare caseworker and often I was temped to give my salary to people whom I could not help in my job. My advocacy for clients and workers rights eventually cost me that job. Your job is challenging. I'd like to work there myself. I've applied many times but don't get called back.
Don't mind me too much friend, people need help and I have no way to help other than to speak up for them. The "quick fix" is not government aid, it is more people to care. Good luck in your work!
