Seems you can't be on the internet, sharing stories from the news, without someone chiming in with such a comment.

Blogger: "Four kids surrounded a jogger and beat them up."

Commenter: "If I were in that situation, I would have done a flying kick on the first, karate chopped two more, and done a judo throw on the last."

No. No, no, no. A thousand times no. It's preposterous to say what you WOULD do, when you haven't been put into that situation. Any criminal only has to be ready at the time of the crime. The victim has to be ready ALL THE TIME. And it's impossible to be 100% alert, 100% of the time. The criminal has had the time to psych themselves up, whereas the victim is probably concentrating on everyday life issues.

But like armchair quarterbacks everywhere, the commenter can make a contortionist green with envy, with the way they can twist themselves around to pat their own back.

There is no TIME when there is a crime in progress. While the mind is still processing the situation, still recovering from the unexpected and unusual situation, the criminal is taking control of the situation. If you haven't practiced dealing with a situation so much that you react almost instinctively, then don't brag about what you would or would not do.

I find it rather funny you would say such a thing..or be indignant aobut it...

Why?

Because you are the worst of the worst..destroying peoples hard work with the shit you post....

The un-intellectual rants and attacks you post against anyone who does not agree with you..

SUGGESTION: If you dont like the post...freaking go somewhere else...there are plenty of threads and you dont need to come into other peoples hard work...screwing it up with your inbicilie like comments..

Your a thug...a very horrible person...your ugly inside...very very ugly inside..

I thought that this was one of the least partisan things that could be posted...

Seems I was wrong. Sheesh.

The un-intellectual rants and attacks you post against anyone who does not agree with you..

As that's coming from someone who has yet to post anything resembling a reasoned, calm, educated, and intelligent post, I'm not sure what to make of it.

If you dont like the post...freaking go somewhere else...there are plenty of threads and you dont need to come into other peoples hard work...screwing it up with your inbicilie like comments..

Ah, I see. So if a thread is posted in the forums, if I disagree with it, and can see several factual errors, as well as an irrational conclusion, I should... NOT... discuss it?

You are, perhaps, unaware that the purpose of the forums is to DISCUSS things. Not to post the most ridiculous, uneducated, irrational conspiracy theories, and expect only to receive fawning adoration.

Stalking?

One does have to be ready, like, lock up your house at night, lock your car doors while driving.

Some things just cannot be prepared for-like a robbery in a grocery store while you're shopping.

Just always know your groundwork surrounding you.

Pretty much, yes. You have to run through your mind what you'll do in a particular situation, and do it again and again until you do it by instinct.

For instance, in self-defense classes, they'll show you moves to do in certain situations. They don't show it to you just once, then expect you to remember it ten years later when you ARE attacked. You won't have the "muscle memory," and you'll be too busy trying to remember how it was done. Assuming you haven't gone into a bit of shock, of course.

They show it to you, then have you practice it with a partner, then presumably you continue to practice it at regular intervals, so that if and when you are attacked, you react before you have time to think. (Which is the whole point: the criminal has had time to think, so they're in the acting phase. If you have to think about it, you're already behind the game; you should be in the reacting and countering phase, not still evaluating the situation.)

In all honesty, if a crime was occurring and I was right there...I don't think I'd be brave enough to try and stop it, and that's the truth...Especially if it was something involving guns or knives or whatever...

"If I were in that situation, I would have done a flying kick on the first, karate chopped two more, and done a judo throw on the last."

That is SO true!!!

the criminal has had time to think, so they're in the acting phase. If you have to think about it, you're already behind the game

And that is even truer!
