I have decided, that maybe crime might pay after all. Especially on weekends.
Yesterday, after reporting an incident of a local kid that fashioned a bayonet and was using it on the horses I board - enticing them over to the fence with grass and then stabbing at them with the bayonet - I received a phone call back from one of the RCMP constables (federal government police force).
Living in a small town, we have a police detachment here. However, that detachment covers a huge area, as there are pockets of small towns, each one 10 to 20 miles between each other.
As the area is large and the detachment is small, there is a central police station about 2.5 hours from here that fields all the phone calls. In reporting the incident, the officer advised me that a constable would be in touch with me. (This was fine, it was a non-emergency).
Well, this is how the ensuing conversation went.
Officer: "Good morning, Ms. "Imp", this is Constable ....... in Grand Forks (an hour drive away and separate detachment) I understand you have an incident to report."
Imp: "Yes officer... yesterday (blah, blah, blah - posted yesterday).
Officer: "Oh, but it's not going on right now."
Imp: "No sir - it happened yesterday. The witnesses stopped by my house today to advise me and give me the weapon. But I don't want it to happen again."
Officer: "Yes, I understand. What I mean is, that there is no one there that works weekends. We only work Monday to Friday 8:30 to 4:30 - and it's way too expensive to send an officer out. We'll send someone out on Tuesday."
Imp: "I see - well the witnesses are leaving Tuesday. They are staying at the trailer park in unit #1, and leaving Tuesday morning."
Officer: "Oh, you don't know who they are?"
Imp: "No, they are visitors to the area - they just happened to see this kid when they were walking their dogs."
Officer: "What about the neighbor?"
Imp: "He didn't see what the kids were doing, he just saw them as they walking past our houses."
Officer: "Oh, well I'll have to get back to you. This costs way too much for us to be sending an officer out."
Well, fortunately, an officer did come out and talk to me and took the weapon. He did speak with the witnesses and my neighbor - AND hopefully, the nasty little boy.
And hopefully, they didn't make a special trip - as I didn't expect that. But shouldn't an officer be patrolling the area anyway? Or attending other incidents? Oh, they would certainly be there if there was an emergency.
But knowing that there are no police on duty for the weekends, doesn't that leave the area wide open to any crime not deemed an emergency? I mean, vehicle theft isn't an emergency - and what is the likelihood of finding it or the thieves, 3 days later?
I mean, geez, I'd sure hate to have my tax dollars of 54% of my income actually WORK for me. I'd hate for a government employee actually have to make an EFFORT to do something.
I don't know why they are called "civil servants". Most of them sure as heck aren't civil, and they certainly aren't "servants".
I've decided that crime actually would pay in this area. And the chances of getting caught, slim to nil. Now I know why the two 20 year olds that terrorized the area, stealing cars, breaking into homes, etc, managed to get away with it for so long.
They did their crimes on weekends! For them, crime actually DID pay! Yes, this is possibly the perfect place to commit a crime.

Wow- IMNSHO there should ALWAYS be someone available. What if the parents of the boy are a-holes and decide to pay you a visit?
HTH could an 8 year old boy figure that out on his own? Maybe file a civil suit in court and bitch about police protection while your at it

Set a net trap, capture the horse stabber and then call the police. Oh, the fun I would have if I were there.
Myself, When I caught the little fvcker, I'd drive him 500 miles into the woods and drop him off. If he made it back home and tried stabbing my horse again, I capture him again. Then drive him 1000 miles into the woods. Until he either didn't make it back or stopped his dumb shit.
