There is some nonsense on right now of America's Next Top Model for girls 5'7" and under. What??

This is dumb on several levels...

1. Major agencies do not hire girls who are under 5'7" as a general rule. By even having this show exist it is giving girls false hope of being a model when it just isn't going to happen.

2. You might be tempted to try to find evidence to refute the above statment, and you would find some. Yes, there are girls under 5'7" signed with agencies like Elite and Ford and such, however, those girls are print models or "niche" models (like "teen" models or something of the like).

3. Girls as short as like 5'3" or 5'4" like some of the girls on this show probably wouldn't even be used in fashion print, they would ONLY be used in commercial print, perhaps in a car ad because a smaller woman makes a car's interior look larger, or in some other special instance.

4. In the 5 minutes I watched of this abomination, there were 5'3" girls having their runway walk tested. Come on now. I know Kate Moss is short and walks the runway, but Kate Moss is FIVE FOOT SEVEN INCHES. She is NOT 5'5", she is not 5'4", and she sure is hell isn't 5'3", nor is any model who gets regular runway work.

Look, I'm not saying this is the way it ought to be, but it's the way it IS. Sample sizes for runway are size 2. All models should be between 5'7" and 6'2" at the most,, and if you're talking about major agencies, it's more like 5'9" to 6'0" with measurements of 34-24-34 for straight models and I think for plus models it's something like 44-34-44 (although I'm not positive on that...the modeling website I moderated for had very few truly plus-size fashion models). These are not suggestions, they are requirements. If you don't fit these requirements, you sure as hell better get discovered by someone famous (like was the case with Kate Moss) or give a real good non-discriminatory bj or no one will look at you twice.

By having a show where not only are girls THAT short told they can be models, but having them WALK A RUNWAY, you are giving girls everywhere false hope in being something they WILL NOT BE. There are enough girls falling for modeling scams, schools like Barbizon which will take anyone for the right price, and such without Tyra (who knows damn well how much authority she has to these girls) telling them they too can be models in spite of the fact that they meet none of the requirements except being pretty. It's bad enough when she has girls on the show who are too thin to be plus-size and too thick to be straight models, now this?

Tyra needs to stop thinking about her ratings and start thinking about how many girls are going to waste their time pursuing something they never would have wasted time on if she had just been honest with them in the first place about how exclusive this world is.

modeling is such an awesome career,,,imagine going all over the world..leaning against things,,,walking up and down a runway....how awe inspiring..what a talent..how long does one have to study to learn how to lean against things?
is a college education required or can any retard apply? i hope my daughter grows up to be nothing more than eye candy for a male dominated world,,how proud i'm going to be!
"look that's my girl! men masturbate to her just like a porn chick,,,we are so proud of her!" what a talent!

has any model ever had the intelligence to question what it is she really does? and how un-important it really is? how she is just a walking, talking mannequin?

just curious

Guess that leaves me out, I'm only 5'1" But I DID do some good photos back in college that were pretty darn hot! Sure wish I still looked like that today, damn ageing process!

It's reality TV hence...it's meant to be preposturous! Tyra's been on a rampage since they said she was fat. Personally, I'd prefer to see more realistic sized women rather then the stick thin and silicone pumped girls.
We aren't all the same and shouldn't be represented as such.

It's more about the face and the style, some models are fabulous for print and covers...Others are runway...There are more models now who are an average of 5"7, 5"8 than ever before.

...Usually these girls end up doing more Cover Girl ads and print than haute couture. They want someone who can do it all. They are going for other things besides height.

That's exactly right.

There are so many beautiful girls who are tall that there isn't any reason to look for shorter ones except for some very specific niche things like you mentioned. It just doesn't happen.

To Sternfan,

I've known a couple agency signed models who I'm sure were smarter than me. Granted, there aren't many, but the odds that a girl will be both THAT beautiful and THAT smart are as slim as the odds of being seven feet tall...being really impressive in several areas is just unlikely.

And I think you're mistaking SOME modeling for ALL modeling. There are calendar girls, or Victoria's Secret models, and yeah, they've probably been jerked off to many times, but most men aren't even sexually attracted to some fashion models. They aren't meant to be sexy, they're meant to be good hangers for the clothes basically, and if they're too sexy that's actually a detriment, because they will distract from the clothes. There are many realms of modeling, but all aim towards the same goal: selling a product. Sometimes that product is themselves, but usually, the product is something else. Most modeling is more akin to being a salesperson than being a porn star.

And by the way, if you can't see beyond what a person does for a living to who they are as a person I think that says more about who you are than about who they are :-P
