In the past 40 years or so I have watched America go from a first rate country to what we have now, yet politicans still insult us by asking us to have faith and trust in them. Just my opinion, but; starting with Vietnam I have been lied to, suckered and out right screwed by politicans, so many times, and for so long, most of them no longer have my respect and trust. Asking me to have faith in them to me is as asking me to be delusional, codependent and dysfunctional. If my wife constantly has affairs, steals money, and I still had trust in her, would I not be delusional, codependent and dysfunctional! I can not divorce my government, so all I have is hope some how it will change. Of course if one believes politicans have been reformed overnight, is content with what Amecica has become, and where it seems to be heading, I am happy for you, but; what is she doing Friday night!

It's all about short-sighted power and money deals. What do the polls say this week, how are we set up for the mid-term elections? The longest they think ahead is 4 years.

Generations ago Kings would have ships built and the forests replanted even though those trees could not be made into ships for a century or more. Our politicians couldn't keep a house plant alive.

One of the good things though is that our "leaders" don't actually lead that much, they kind of get pushed along by the rest of us. So in a way as long as a large enough percent of the population still believes in individualism and hard work and reward they can't stray too far from the ideal without getting pulled back or booted from office.
Let's hope the recent economic events have reawakened the individual responsibility trait of enough people to get things on the right track despite gov't "help".

ALL politicians couldn't keep a house plant alive.

it should have read there doll, at least the US is allowed to report inconsistancies what about the world of politics and all of them fly around the world to gloat in front of each other as to how much they have stashed

lawyers and politicians are the scum of the earth

You are not dillusinal if you have faith, all you say is true about politics, however faith is believing in something you cannot see or understand is not foolish. Albert Einstein once said the most beautiful thing we can experiance is the mysterious. It's OK to believe even if we get slapped over and over..................Patience through Perseverance

LB> Isn't the more fundamental question..when are we going to be so upset with the way things are...that any of us run for that office we are so willing to gripe and grouse about???? State legislature, mayors, county council, congress, White House? Lots of griping and grousing...not a whole lot of action though...ya know??

Maybe form a non-profit to serve as a watchdog agency of your local politicians? Maybe join a group that one actually does something...something more meaningful, substantive, and real than harp, gripe and grouse on the internet over and over??

Many of us love to yearn for a revolution, and make all sorts of chest-thumpin sounds about revolution. Even if we had a revolution...aren't we still going to be sitting on our hands watching others do things to us...waiting for others to do what we each consider is the right thing...which of course...is never the same thing between each of us? Aren't we waiting for others to be a savior, a messiah..something other than...our self???

I went into teaching, because I thought so many teachers sucked. I knew few could teach to what I understood and saw regarding the student/teacher relationship...so...rather than write editorials over and over (I ran an 'underground' paper during my high school days) I trained to be a teacher.

Taught for almost 16 yrs, high school and college. And ya know...a lot of teachers...still suck. School still sucks. But I don't bother to harp and grouse about it because it's a human institution in which fear comes to dominate it (i.e., there's still book burnings!) and habits and institutional life overtakes the mission of any human institution. And as in politics...too many people prefer the grousing paradigm to the action paradigm.

Why keep plugging my life energy into cooperating with people's fears? What does grousing do in a public forum except enjoin like-minds in a ego circle-jerk?

Is there any greater impotence than griping about the same thing all the time and doing nothing meaningful about it? Writing a letter or calling or whatever...not all that meaningful. Our communities need tons of help in all sorts of directions. Helping people learn to read, picking up trash, working with youth programs,...whatever...tons of things.

Why do we have so much time to bemoan our impotence? Life is short. Tough. Filled with suffering. Why so much energy spent accomplishing so little?

Life doesn't ask for your faith and trust, because it knows you will put it in the wrong things to begin with. It asks of you your heart, your energy, your commitment, to engage and be engaged. Not to be a spectator. Not to be a dummy, a slave, a puppet...but an engaged life force being a part of others struggles. We're a social animal. We don't exist without one another in so many different ways. We need each other in so many ways simply to exist. We know that helping one another is actually healthy for us, and helps us repair our bodies, as we relieve the stress of our impotence.

What to do? Simple. Ask others..."What can I do to help...?"

An amazing transformation occurs when one's impotence is not the focus of one's attention.
