One 4-month-old baby was shaken so violently she needed surgery. Another 3-week-old suffered fractured ribs from abuse at home.
Those cases reported by Boston hospitals are part of a spike in child abuse in United States during a recession that has driven some families to the brink and overwhelmed cash-strapped child-protection agencies. “In the last three months we have twice as many severe inflicted injury cases as we did in the three months the previous year,” said Allison Scobie, program director of the Child Protection Team at Boston’s Children’s Hospital.
The Kelsey Smith-Briggs StoryPLEASE take time to click and watch This beautiful happy little girl was stolen from her family, by the hands of her stepfather. Allegations of abuse while her father was away serving our county in Iraq went unheard. After being removed from the home she shared with her mother and step father- amid the numerous allegations, she was returned to the very people responsible now for her death. It wasn't just a tragic death, it was a preventable horrifying act. A brave soldier fighting for his country returned home to this. That is no welcome for any of our heros.
Child Abuse in America.....
Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. In 2007, approximately 5.8 million children were involved in an estimated 3.2 million child abuse reports and allegations.
Statistics
-Almost five children die everyday as a result of child abuse. More than three out of four are under the age of 4.

-It is estimated that between 60-85% of child fatalities due to maltreatment are not recorded as such on death certificates.

-A report of child abuse is made every ten seconds.

-Ninety percent of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way; 68% are abused by family members.

-Child abuse occurs at every socio-economic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.

-Thirty-one percent of women in prison in the United States were abused as children.

-Over 60% of people in drug rehabilitation centers report being abused or neglected as a child.

-About 30% of abused and neglected children will later abuse their own children, continuing the horrible cycle of abuse.

-About 80% of 21 year old that were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.

-The estimated annual cost resulting from child abuse and neglect in the United States for 2007 is $104 billion.

It's so so sad when a so-called adult needs to take out their rage on an innocent child. Children are so vulnerable and continue to love their abuser because that's just the way children are.....pure and trusting.

We live in such a disposable and "me first" society that many people haven't developed coping skills and usually turn their rage on the very person that loves and supports them the most.

I agree with mom I will never understand what goes thru people's mind to have to abuse anyone period.. .....and to abuse little children....there is no reason, I get very upset when I hear about this Children are innocent, loving in everyway.....and this happens, many don't know what goes on behind closed doors.......that is the sad truth and unfortunately with any kind of abuse.......people look away too They don't want to get involved which I will never understand

Three things to add to this... A baby was raped and beaten (3wks old) by her father while the mother was at work, here in AZ, She is not expected to live.

My grandson was stolen from his mother by his father when he was one, said father lied in court and said no other custody cases were pending. Said idiot father put my grandson in a day care center that, get this, had pit bulls on the premises.... My grandson was 2 when they attacked him. Mass. enacted a law called PJ's law, its named after my grandson.

My granddaughter was molested, and at 8 years old had to go testify in court. She bravely sat there and did what she had to do, trusting that the laws would protect her, they didn't. Even with dna evidence, the jury let the bastard go. Yes, there are laws that need to be inacted... right away!

Paul this happens way to often and sad to say here in SC it is out of hand...NO CHILD needs to be hurt and to be hurt by a parent is inexcusable as you know I had custody of 3 of my grandchildren--why? because the oldest one was beaten with a car antenna..his stepfather thought he broke a window..my grandson was only 4 I had picked him up to take him to chucky cheese for his 4th b-day and while bathing him seen all the bruises .. I was asked to take them for 48 hours ( turned into 6 years )all the rest of the abuse all 3 suffered became very clear to us the youngest was only 9 months old...my daughter was also a victim of his abuse but was charged with failure to protect it took many many years for her to understand this..she now is remarried to a wonderful man...I called the police and the department of children and families and I don't ever regret it!!!! the only thing I do regret is that I wish I had paid more attention to all the signs looking back over it they were there... he served 6 months in jail but not for what he did..sorry for my long comment..this touches home...good blog Paul

Sadly, we can track the increase of sexual child abuse to rise of the internet.

It has unleashed the once domesticated primal sexual urge with the onslaught of easy accessible porn.

Last week in my hometown a father was arrested for killing his two month old child by throwing that baby against the wall.
Hell be locked up in Wisconsin but I wish we could send that trash to a prison in Texas or Oklahoma.
Inmates there dont tolerate rude behavior in a man.

Did anyone else see the other video claiming the other family was partially at fault? Hm? No one? Who knows what actually happened? Seems the paternal family may have been involved in the abuse. Also seems the paternal family is trying to capitalize off the death of the child.

The other story

Any capital punishment in cases like that
OR
The law just slaps the offender on the wrist???
I think it is not a by-product of the current economic climate
I think it is much deeper
in any case it is VERY SICK

Sep 12 @ 12:37AM

I think part of all this is a by-product of our society that is filled with greed and greed-linked "pride" ("I have the most toys...") rather than with real values.

The main "value" of a society should not be a monetary one.
It should be the CHILDREN.
Parents should first and most care for their children, not for their houses, cars, toys, plasma TV's and what not.....

They don't.
Some DO, but many don't.

It's who can get the most high on possession.... (possession of money, stuff, drugs, etc....(

Children are often only just "tolerated". Yes, they are cute when they smile and they are the pride of their parents when they succeed in something.
But the rest of the time, they shouldn't be seen nor heard...
Or should they?

Also, some mothers just really live in a stupid fairy tale. They tell their kids about the "mean strangers" and things.... and are totally blind to the "wolf" who lives at home...

So much could be done...
So much SHOULD be done...

And who does SOMEthing?

Not many....

It's a sad, sad, and sick world, I tell you....

its your kids.... but you can arrange demonstrations about the abusive health care system instead or whining about a leader who was legally voted instead instead of going to those town centers and making your voices heard until measures are put in place to protect the little ones future generations of abuses will rule this land and when you are old.... you will feel it

instead, you can make your voices heard and change all abuse of children
SweetNapaGuy

Sep 12 @ 12:58AM
It might also be linked to the trend to keeping an eye out for problems. In the old days, people didn't question bruises and broken bones that happened to kids. People just didn't want to know. Now, we're more open about the evils that twist within the human soul, and we cast a gimlet eye towards anything suspicious. (Thankfully, we've retreated from the "witch hunts" of just a couple decades ago. But not so far that we ignore the evidence before our eyes.)

SNG.... I disagree...

I have read several studies that found that abuse, especially sexual abuse, is WAY on the rise....
There has never been a time before where so many children were sexually, and therefore emotionally, abused...

The problem is that the law just slaps the little finger (not even the hand or wrist) of any sexual abuser. Too often, they are out and about after only a few months in jail... And when you check on repeat offenders.... turns out that sexual predators are generally repeat offenders, and after a few months in jail, they go back to their old habits.

I think doll is right....

What about the sex offenders that are being sent to mental institutions, rather than being released into the public?

And I'm all for life-time imprisonment/hospitalization of anyone who has a proven attraction to children...

Me too....

How about getting Alcatraz back into service?

Or prison colonies like those in French Guiana (did you ever read "Papillon"?)
An Island would be "perfect".... easier to contain.... no evasions....

But first, the law should be inforced, predators taken off the streets, out of homes, and incarcerated for at least 25 years per offense.... when it was an offense against children. No reduction of time to serve...

Oh, wait, come ON, people. Child abuse has been done for centuries. They just had higher mortality rates and no one worried about it back in the darker times and last century or so. Look at all the priests they are busting JUST NOW for molesting children 20 or more years ago. We are only finding out about it now. The crowding is such, it is hard to hide those things now.

My mother beat the crap out of me as a kid. One day I saw a picture in the paper. A young boy with a cauliflower ear. I read the article. First time I ever heard anything about that sort of stuff, other than my own abuse. I took it to my mom all dumb, you know and pointed to it. I said...isn't that what you have been doing to me? (abuse, beatings)

She threatened to lock me up in an insane asylum if I ever said anything about it to anyone.

When I turned 18, she hit me one day and I hit her back. I figured I was safe. She could not just lock me up anymore. She burst into tears. I told her... You EVER hit me again, B*tch, I will kill you. She never touched me again.

Unfortunately, I too have been violent. I have a temper. Hence why I never had children, never married easily. I did NOT want to pass that legacy on to my children. I CHOSE not to raise children to lose my temper with. After I found that I could control myself, I went into menopause. So... our family line is dying out. Maybe that is the best thing.

Maybe we should sterilize all people and reverse only those that prove to be decent human beings. Send them to school for parenting if they want to have babies. Make them pass the tests.

Stop letting people have babies they can't afford or don't want.

something they didn't mean to have but it's the permanent result from some human who have no moral but tempolary satisfactoiness, they didn't mean to have babies, or those parents have mental problems, family issues..they release their presure to the innocents.,economic is just another reason makes things worsen .
Maybe I'm wrong but it might be right in some cases at last.

so what we people can help those people not to abuse their child,, i doubt

Have a good weekend Mr Paul

Castration. The real kind, not the chemical kind. That's an alternative to killing pedophiles for all the capital punishment opposers.

But...alas......it's "cruel and unusual".

So for now, we get to watch as people with double standards and screwed priorities allow pedophiles to continually be re-released into society, to abuse even more kids.

Yes, we've come such a long way in civility. We protect the rights of people who rape and murder our most valuable possessions, then pay tax dollars to support them in prisons.

The only positive thing that comes from this is how these predators are treated by real criminals.

Who's the little girl now?

I have read of the "results" of castrating predators.... and the whole paper I read was one big lamentation about the "poor" guy...

Personally, I have NO PITY for people like that. NONE, zero....
They can be castrated. That's actually too nice a feat for them, after what they did to little CHILDREN.

I would deport them to a deserted island, let them loose there, give them food, shelter, basic medical. No TV, no internet. I would patrol the waters around the island, but not the island....
Let them have "fun" with themselves....

(Ooooohoooo.... I know, I'm horrible and totally "politically INcorrect"... I can't stand grown men who prey on children.... )

Don't forget grown women. Women's crimes against children are on the rise.

Child abuse... physical and sexual.. has been around since the beginning of time.

There is no cure for pedophiles. The recidivism rate is 100%. Castration doesn't always work either. The biggest sexual organ is the brain. With castration they may not be able to "finish" what they started, but they can still attack, fondle, mutilate, etc.

There are 2 options. Life imprisonment without possibility of parole. OR the death penalty. Make it swift so justice is served.

Mr.Paul,
It seems like everytime you turn on the news, we hear of another child being abused and or killed by those who have charge of their lives. It breaks my heart and sometimes it's very hard to listen to, It makes me wonder what in the hell goes through someone's mind, I have two children, now adults, and 3 grandchildren soon to be 4 grandchildren. I came from an abused childhood in and out of foster care and taken away by the state several times, there was allot of physical and emotional abuse that went on, However we reach a point in our lives where we know right from wrong, so I don't have any sympathy for those who had an abusive past that carry the torch to the next generation. They knew it was wrong when it was being done to them.

on the Oprah show, the guy who has written computer software for law enforcement, cant remember his name.. he comes from Wisconsin. He helps catch them too, well he said one of the child porn videos that he witnessed was a baby girl being raped as she was born . How can anyone get so sick?

cut that thing off and that will stop

but i believe it will stop in a hurry when castration is pasted into law and also

prosecute the buyers, hang them out for all to see in the media. Right now only the seller is prosecuted not the buyer. why??? Let us see who the buyers are and that whole industry will dry up

i dont believe these guys cannot control themselves and theres no cure blah blah... introduce these two laws and you will see that business dry up after a few heads have been shown all over the news internationally

best way to nip this in the butt - here and now

A large problem also seems to be that a lot of people are raised with a lack of morals, compassion and lack of respect, they don't care about the consequences or their actions

yes, absolutely
travelwoman

Sep 12 @ 3:12PM

If it's a woman....
If it's this or that...
If... the law should be for ALL.... But it is a fact that the majority of abusers a men, especially when it comes to sexual abuse....
But that doesn't get the women off the hook. There are some that are VERY bad.

I think laws need to be enforced much better.
I think those monsters need to be persecuted.
I think they should get life sentence without parole... That's what they did to the children.... a LIFE SENTENCE

No "rich" guy should be able to get off because he can afford the best lawyers. No one should be able to get off for "insanity", whether it was "temporare" or not.

No one should be able to get off because she's a woman.

NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET OFF, if they abused a child, period.

And dizzy had a great idea: let those names be known.... especially in their communities....

BTW, dizzy, when we lived in Arkansas, it seems to me that they persecuted people for watching and possession of those movies...
(I might be wrong, though.... I would need to check....)
