I'm a mean mom, by some standards. My kids are required to pay rent when they are out of High School if they are not in college. That puts two of my children in the "renter" catagory. Life is not easy or free. The sooner they learn real world lessons the less shocked they'll be when they are there.

Rent is due on the 1st. For some reason they seem to think as long as the day they pay has a 1 in it somewhere they're fine. This month I posted their bills and put a late fee policy at the bottom. My youngest (19) handed me a signed check this morning to avoid the late fee. I looked at her and said..."you have enough money in your bank account to cover this check"? She shot me a blank look and replied "well, I'll get paid next week"....LOL (I'm on her account and check it online...it would bounce sky high and the bad part is if she overdraws, the money is deducted from MY account)....Maybe I should insist on cash from this one! That reminds me of the kid who thought his mom had money as long as she had checks.

Awwww, parenting is grand!

Thats not a bad policy. Before I moved back here after my parents health problems, I rented this apartment that I am in now. They gave me until the 5th to pay up. There were only a couple times I didnt have the money because of people not paying me for working, but they knew what was going on so it was cool. I dont pay rent now, but I also now take care of the dishes, cooking, lawn care and anything else that needs to be done in the house. All the time I put in per month, it would be cheaper to pay rent. But my father needs the help more than the money. This way I can take a day off or 2 to do things around the house without having to worry.

I sound like a bum.

It is not wise for a parent to enable their child in being irresponsible. It is a very hard thing to NOT be an enabler as a parent. The real world is cruel and unforgiving on late fees and the quicker they learn that at home, the better off they will be later.

A suggestion is to get a predated check for the first of the month and when you know their paycheck goes into the bank, be the first to grab it out on their paycheck deposit day. Be firm in not lending them money unless YOU know why they need it. If they bought a pair of guccu shoes for themselves then make them take it back rather than lend to them. Maybe if it is because they needed a car repair, that is justification to lend to them. Those were just examples to get a point across.

Just food for thought.
