Today I went to a one day conference. The topic was self advocacy for people with disabilities. Talk about a wonderful way to spend a Sunday! People with all kinds of disabilities, from very severe to almost subtle. To deformaties, to non verbal. The parade of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, aides, began this morning. Talk about determination. They filed into the conference with smiles, their best dress on, and eager to tell their stories. One woman who was in a wheelchair said she refused to get a power wheelchair because she wanted the exercise. Wow huh? Another with CP is the mother of four children ,4, 2, and 6 month old twins!!!!!! The MC talked with a communication device, (with a head pointer to be more specific!!!! ) The woman who was in charge of the entire conference is married to a man with dwarfism, has one child with him and a second on the way! Utterly inspiring. They spoke of how it is cheaper for a builder to build several accessible houses at one time, than to modify a standard home afterwoods. They spoke of challenges still existing in the community to make their lives have quality. During the conference some folks had behaviour issues, and no-one minded. Everyone was accepted. No-one turned to stare, glare, put down, laugh, etc. I have written of this before. "Everyone is the same only different." This day was a perfect example of this. Everyone can learn from folks with unique challenges. When you think about it, we all have a disability of some sort. I had an awesome day. Have a great week all. peace

Talk about determination.

People with disabilities are a great inspiration to me.
Those who go even further are the greatest inspiration to me.
It is a pleasure meeting them.
You must have felt so great after hearing their stories and sharing time with them.
I wish sometimes that they weren't "hidden" so much.

At my son's before and after school program last year, there was a teacher with severe physical disabilities in a wheelchair, and with a helping dog. It was a great experience for the children to realize all that we can learn from people like this teacher. And also, to realize that being in a wheelchair, and/or being otherwise disabled, doesn't meen you are not smart....

Great blog...

Life is not very easy.........at all but when you change your mind and your attitude sees the big picture and can accomplish alot instead of limiting yourself

If you ever get the chance, watch a film called 'Dirty Filthy Love.'
You will learn a lot from that too.

Oh, this means so much to me.
My daughter didn't walk until she was six and still has mobility issues. She doesn't speak well, and has various other issues.

She had a starting teacher that responded to my concern one day "You aren't doing your job as a parent if you don't pi$$ some people off"

Thank you for your story!

Loreli..... I am so sorry......

Unfortunately... ..not everyone sees that.........they think because of some little thing......there whole life has fallen apart......... I try to open there minds. .....to see how much they do have.......an how a split second ..........can change there life. Each day is important and every breath you take is vital.........every smile you see has so much meaning.............for continuing on ...........what others may take advanatage of, one moment can change the rest of your life and I am glad you wrote this.........again it speaks volumes.........for everyone!

Its a shame how people treat people with a disability as you know I see it up close and personal..my brother looks fine on the outside but suffers a major brain injury..we moved from where he were living because he was an assault victim and when we moved to where we live now anytime he would take a walk the police were called because people thought he was crazy or drunk..at first we were told to keep him in the yard yet his Dr said walking was very good for him.. ..anyway the police here know us well and now he can walk and if their called they know its him walking again wonderful blog and so well needed..kudos my sista

Yep, many have disabilities. Some people work past them. Some people capitalize with them (use them to be supported and never strive). Some of us refuse to be labeled and think a different way around all situations that stymie us.

Sometimes disabilities make us stronger and smarter. It really depends on the person WITH the disability on how they react to it and with it. When I was injured, I fought against receiving disability and insisted on retraining so I could be productive. That was before computers being popular. I wonder if I would have made the grade now? Damn puters. Might have taken that disability to sit parked in front of the puter.

You get tired of fighting after awhile, I guess.
