I remember in the 80’s when the mobile phone craze hit the UK. I saw a guy walking along holding what looked like a big black brick to his ear.

Now in 2009 phones are much smaller and can do so much more than just call or receive calls.

But it seems that the mobile phone has become more than an object of use, but a fashion accessory too, a statement of “look what I got”.

Admittedly teens seem to be more impressed with which phone their friends have, but adults are just as guilty sometimes.

When I went to get myself a new phone here in Texas, I didn’t need GPS, the internet, or any of the other gadgets that can come with these things.. I just wanted a phone.

A plain and simple phone.

I want to make a call, receive a call and text. Simple eh?

Nope!

We went to several mobile phone shops, offering great packages on their calling tariffs, but the choice of phones were all complex and expensive.

“This one has satellite, the internet, it can download tunes….” The assistant proudly told me, showing me a phone for $200.

“No, I just want a basic phone.”

She looked at me as if I had just come off the planet Zob.

Another provider took me to the display of Blackberry’s.

“This one is very popular” he said, taking it off its stand to show me in more detail.

“No, I don’t want a Blackberry, I just want a basic phone.”

He looked surprised as if I was the first person who came in that day to have said such a thing.

The third place we went, I said…..

“I want a basic phone, I don’t want a Blackberry, or a fancy phone that sends me news updates, music downloads, weather alerts, gps systems, touch screens or anything else. I just want a phone.”

She stood there for a minute as if I had just sent her in to a whole new world, her face was blank for at least a few moments.

Finally after going through at least 10 expensive phones that had all sorts of unnecessary (for me anyway) gadgets on them, she showed me a Kyocera K342.
Small, compact little phone, it doesn’t have too many gadgets on it, at last!! A small phone that does just the jobs I want it to!

My phone isn’t a fashion statement or an accessory, it’s a phone!

Oh and if you ever want to call me.. my number is……

My view is, what does it matter what kind of car you drive. It's sole purpose is to get you from point A to point B. I equate the vehicle thing to cell phones. Who cares if you have the newest phone, or a diamond encrusted faceplate or an Italian leather cover...........ITS A PHONE!

I bought my phone over two years ago. It's a Krzr, and I love it. The only special thing about it is that it's also an MP3 player, and since I don't have an iPod, I sort of like that.

Both the phone and the battery show water damage, but it still works like a charm, getting service in areas that neither of my daughters can get. They are on the same plan as me, but with newer phones (they both have the Propel) and their service comes and goes.

Don't text me, cuz I HATE texting, but you can call me anytime. My number is....

I feel the same way, I just want a phone, maybe get a signal most of the time and not drop calls would be nice.

As long as it has a keyboard, camera and a speaker phone I'm good to go.

I just wanted a phone, but only because it made me feel good when I had the first one.

I hate talking on the telephone, I always have.

My phone contract ends on the 9th October 2009 and it will be a happy day for me.

I got a phone from AT&T not to long ago and my plan calls for 450 minutes a month and they roll over course I don't talk on it that much. I have unlimted text messages cause my mother would rather send text messages and my dad has AT&T I can call him for free.

I like my phone it has a camera on it don't use it too much and a keyboard and all that junk on it but it does one thing it rings and I can talk on it and call people, thats all that matters

No one calls me anyway and I don't call people at all hardly

I bought my phone in 2005, can you believe it...!

It does NOTHING but phone calls and text. No camera, no internet, no GPS, no anything....

It looks "old" and that is just fine with me. Because...
I'm using it for making phone calls...
For everything else I have a computer.... at home, and I don't take photos, surf the web or need GPS when driving around...
(I do have a camera for taking photos when I want photos.... )

I have several phones I do have my blackberry I love to get phones with great quality speaker phones cuz I am always doing things, camera is necessary cuz sometimes your out or something you may need to take a picture of something to send a friend or want it for later for an idea or need it for an emergency situation which I highly recommend, I also need the maximum address book and I like to make sure it is 4 quads to be able to get the best kinds of calls when traveleling internationally..... other friends have not had that luck and if you travel you may get a dead spot I have never had a dead spot......there are many reasons why and how I choose my phone, I am happy though and yes mine has a navigator even though I have one for my car........ I like gadgets and I like to stay up with the most current but........it is for me and what my needs are for

I'm not a gadget fiend or texter. Matter of fact, I hate texting.
My phone has lots of extra features I do not use, but I love it for what I do use on it. I'll probably keep it until it needs a new battery & the battery costs as much as a new phone.....

I never wanted a cell phone.I find them annoying...However I did succumb and bought one...A basic phone, it has a camera on it that I don't use and I've not texted once in my life...I think my air time last month was something like 34 minutes...Lol...

You forgot to call them annoyances. I dont miss my cell phone at all. Though it could have been useful when I broke down the other day. I dont like talking on the phone much, you cant read a persons movements, so you dont know if they are lying to you or not. That and I dont like people being able to reach me or know where I am.

Thats just me in my paranoid state.

I DON'T have a cell phone! Imagine that! I have a land line that is necessary for my satalite TV to be updated nightly...I don't even have long distance on my land line....lol so I dial 36 numbers when I make a long distance for 3.9 cents a min......unless I use my computer for one cent/min with $2.99/mon. for the other area code and number.....

I do know how to use one though...had one in Sacramento...but it only worked in Sac area ...ONLY! so...back to nowhere land in Texas and no mobile phone...I'm not mobile anyway....lol for awhile anyway....

I just bought a couple of months ago one of those Trac-Phones... pay as you use up the minutes you have to pre-pay for.
The only thing other than calling you can do on it is text... but I don't know how to text lol
Only family has the number... it's for emergencies only

I used to have a cell phone.. cost me about 40 bucks a month for a one year contract.
I used it all of five whole minutes the entire year and thought to myself... " who's the dumbazz here?"... they got my money and I got a "quickie"
