A few days ago I stopped by the local library to meet up with my youngest daughter, Amber and my two grandsons, ages 3 and 2 yrs old. I went down to the childrens department and observed my grandsons looking at books with vivid interest. As I watched them, I realized that my daughter had passed down her love of reading-- to them, as I did to her when she was a child.
I have always loved to read and let's face it, with eight children in the family growing up.. there was not a lot of money to do fun things but going to the library was not only fun...it was free! We would check out an armload of books and excitingly carry them home(walking the 2 miles one way was not given a second thought as we walked everywhere as children.. even as teenagers) I remember even as a young child I loved mysteries and old westerns.. they were my favorites. Of course as a young teenager, I did get into the romance novels but my overriding joy was mysteries! I could get lost in a new adventure and forget what my life really was like. Uninterrupted, I could read a nice size hard bound book from start to finish in less then 3 hours... and make a book report about it if need be.
Reading has always been such a simple pleasure.. it doesn't cost anything to check books from the library (unless, of course, you don't return the borrowed materials in a timely fashion) and for me, the library has always represented a place of solitude, peace and endless adventures. Row after row of colorful books just waiting to be pulled off the shelf and read by a devout reader.
To this day, I find great comfort in a comfortable chair, warm blanket, good book and a cup of tea or hot chocolate. I can relax after a long day or spend part of my Sunday in "my room" just getting into a great mystery, thriller or just a silly story.. depending on my mood. Aside from writing, reading is one of my biggest passions and I am so glad I passed the love of reading and books down to three of my four children.. and now to my grandchildren.
One of the most valuable treasures we can pass down to our children and grandchildren is the love of reading. It allows the mind to go places that perhaps normally we could not go in "real life"... brings great peace to the soul...promotes language skills...and cognitive thinking.
Yes.. there is simple pleasure in a book and so much to learn between those pages and I am so glad my grandsons have learned the love of something so precious as reading.
The library still inspires me whenever I step into it.. like a long lost friend it embraces me with its quietness and surrounds me with a peace and I know this is the place I can retain my simple pleasure....reading!

Great blog Snappy! I too was raised with the library as my "home away from home". In fact, when I was in high school & college there were no computers to use for researching, it was all done thru visits to the library & checking books out. Thanks to the library & their resources, the tedious task of researching & comparing the life & writings of Alexander Solzhenitsyn & putting it down on paper was one of many successes as a college student.
Mysteries? Those are my faves also . . . got some good suggestions?

A lifelong commitment to reading is soooo important. Children who read are the children of readers. Children who read succeed in school and in life.

This is beautiful
I read all the time. Now I try to limit myself to buying one new book a week. It never lasts a week though.
I spent more time at the library when I was young, than I did at home.
It's awesome to see little ones having a love of reading like that

Growing up, books were my best friends and the library was where they lived. I visited them often.
I still always have a book...or three...going and thankfully my younger son is following in my footsteps.
Nice blog!

I would also like to add that reading to our children before bedtime is such an awesome time to bond with them. When mine were little bedtime stories were their favorite part of the day and it gave me and them a chance to wind down from the busy daily routine and we all slept better!
Thanks to all for your comments!
Happy Reading

For anyone with little children, grandchildren, etc . . . The Little Critter books (by Mayer) are awesome! My kids grew up on them & then passed them on to my nieces & nephews.

I think we may have had a mind meld. Yesterday I was thinking about books & reading & a potential blog.
These thoughts may have been prompted by reading some book reviews in the paper.
My Christmas Wish list always included books... from the time I remember learning to read. I can remember the smell & the feel of the books I read as a child ... the quiet & calm of the library ... reading into the night with a flashlight under the covers...
Books are my comfort in the wee hours of those insomnia nights.
Beautiful words, my friend.
