Celebrity-worship and hero-worship should not be confused. Yet we confuse them every day, and by doing so we come dangerously close to depriving ourselves of all real models. We lose sight of the men and women who do not simply seem great because they are famous but are famous because they are great. We come closer and closer to degrading all fame into notoriety. ~ Daniel J. Boorstin Think about it... ask most people who their local firemen are, who their local heroes are and I will wager dollars to donuts no one knows those people. Yet, ask them who their favorite star is .. who they believe are role models, and I will wager, once again, that they will inevitably rattle off a list of movie stars, athletes, etc.
I think in the game of life, our thinking has become clouded. We seem (and again, folks, I am using the collective we for the sake of the writing.. do NOT get your panties in a bunch because it would hurt if you sat down with them in that state) to look up to those celebrities that have the fancy cars, the big sprawling mansions, the furs, the jewelry and most little kids grow up wanting to be just like those famous beautiful people.
These are people that are making ginormous salaries for things I don't believe cut it in the world as role model material. Think about it... the celebrities get millions of dollars to learn rote manner of remembering lines and reciting them in front of a camera. Acting their golden behinds off...and living well above the standard that most people would be very satisfied coming close to. Now, there are those advocates that will say.. these people work hard for their money, let them do with it as they please, if only I could be like that...
Really???
The honest-to-gawd role models, in this ole gal's mind, are those that when they see trouble do not do as most of us will.. run from it, but rather run full force into it. I am talking about the soldiers who defend our freedoms, who give all they can for the safety and welfare of each of us so that we can lay our heads down in the comfort of our own beds each night. The EMTs and ambulance people... those that fly life-flights.. the cops .. the nurses .. the doctors ... the farmers
Maybe that group of people that I just named will never in their lifetime own a porsche, or be able to buy bling, bling jewelry. But they have more going on inside them than most ..they have hearts that care.. they are willing to risk their lives to make sure ours are a little bit safer, better, calmer.
I sometimes complain about things that happen in my "life" and let's face it .. we all have fit that hits the shan in our lives.. but collectively, we are much better off than so many. And though I have a modest list of things I would like in my life, I am still breathing and in reasonably great health (minus the frikken aches and pains of aging).. and for me, that is fine.. as Kenny Chesney says in his new song with Dave Matthews:
So damn easy to say that life’s so hard Everybody’s got their share of battle scars As for me I’d like to thank my lucky stars that I’m alive, and well
It’d be easy to add up all the pain And all the dreams you sat and watched go up in flames Dwell on the wreckage as it smolders in the rain But not me, I’m alive
And today you know that’s good enough for me Breathin' in and out's a blessin' can’t you see Today's the first day of the rest of my life And I’m alive, and well I’m alive, and well
Stars are dancin’ on the water here tonight It’s good for the soul, when there’s not a soul in sight But this boat has caught its wind and brought me back to life Now I’m alive, and well
And today you know that’s good enough for me Breathin' in and out's a blessing can’t you see Today is the first day of the rest of my life Now I’m alive, and well Yeah I’m alive, and well Choose those you admire and look up to with thought of what they do to enrich lives and promote peace in this world... not by their income, what they drive or where they live.
And for gramps: Tough Call:
The Wedding Ring A man went to the hospital in Cooktown, Queensland to have his wedding ring cut off from his penis. According to the nurse attending the operation, the patient's girlfriend found the ring in his pants pocket. She didn't know he was married and she was so mad she used petroleum jelly to slip the ring on his penis while he was asleep. I don't know what's worse: 1) Having your girl friend find out you're married. 2) Explaining to your wife how your wedding ring got on your penis. OR... 3) Finding out your penis fits through your wedding ring. Tough call. You decide.
