Saturday we had plans, go to a peanut festival, but the weather didn’t want to comply, so we abandoned that idea. Instead we went to the post office early and then went to my favourite charity shop.

We bought a 2 seater sofa (love seat) it matched our 3 seater really well and it was in great condition. It had 90 dollars on the ticket, crossed off then 60, then I noticed a sign that said All furniture 50% off today!
So we bought it for $30 ! it looks hardly worn, not a mark anywhere and the cushions are still firm, what a bargain!

Saturday night I chatted with my mother on the phone about November and my trip to the UK, she was very excited.

Sunday morning we got up early and headed off to a few estate sales, many were called off, but one was still on.
I got chatting with the lady owner of the house, half way through our conversation she said..

“You’re British aren’t you!”

I smiled, and said.. “Well.. sort of, I’m English.”

“Isn’t that the same thing?” She asked looking puzzled.

“Well British means either from Scotland, Ireland England or Wales, and I cant be from every country at the same time now, could I?”

“Wow I never thought of that!” She laughed.

Her Granddaughter heard the conversation and joined us.

“Wow your accent is sooo cool!”

I laughed and thanked her.

After buying a few things and saying our goodbyes, Gregg and I loaded our purchases on to the truck and headed home.

A bit damp and cold, we unloaded, changed in to something warm and dry and I then put the kettle on for some hot tea!

Gregg got some juice and he sat and opened his mail.

His tax bill had arrived from the accountant.

The amount owed even after the extension meant that my trip to see my parents will have to be postponed.

I think Gregg almost expected me to throw a tantrum or something, instead I shrugged, I told him that life is what it is, and although that I am disappointed, no trip to the UK could come before commitments.

Today I had to tell my mother, it wasn’t going to be easy.

I settled on the computer chair and pulled up skype.

As it loaded, I glanced out of my window to see the light rain haze my view of the front yard.

A dreary day, so apt for a dreary and sad conversation.

I know my mother has been looking forward to seeing me for such a long time, and we haven’t seen each other since March.

Being the only child too means that I am all she has in the way of blood family, all our relatives have died, only a distant cousin who she sees maybe once a year, himself being in his 70’s lives in Wales.

I could almost feel my mother holding back her tears as I told her of the sad news.

“But I promise we will see each other next year for my 50th.” I reassured her.

She tried to sound cheered by my reassurance, but I could tell that she was deeply upset.

I tried to end the conversation on a lighter note, saying that now we have time to plan a party, and she did her best to sound enthusiastic.

I turned off skype and went to make a cup of coffee.

I stood in the dining room watching the old man that walks by our house every day, he made his way along the road, stooped over and wearing a plastic hooded jacket, holding the collar together around his neck.
He makes his way up this way every day, I don’t know who he is or where he goes, but he does the trip every day, and walks back down again half an hour later.

Watching the old man, with coffee in my hand, as he did his best to protect himself from the cold rain…

I thought how much life is like the old mans journey, not every day is going to be sunny, some days we have to experience some rain.
Life has it’s commitments and responsibilities, and it cant all run how we would like it to sometimes.

And all we have to do is wait for the sun to come out again.

And I know it will.

But for today,.. its a >>Rainy sad Monday<<

LOL...I guess that makes me British, as my family came from Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales, in addition to Germany, Italy, France, and Netherlands.

I'm sorry you had to postpone your trip but you know that you will make the journey, just like the old man walking down your street in the rain.

my favourite blogger. while i was in the US everyone kept asking me if i was British, and you know our accents are so different. I think its because many people in the US have not been exposed to the different cultures and peoples.

anyway, i too am sad for your news but commitment comes before pleasure and everything happens for a reason. at least your mum will be happy to see you for the big 50 doll
