I was on the highway yesterday and two cars literally flew right past me going 100+ miles per hour ! This reminded me of the time I was 17 and riding in a friends sportscar. It was a Lotus Elan 2+2 convertible... bright yellow. One night, we took the car on a deserted stretch of highway known as Route 9. When you told someone you were going on Route 9, they knew it was to race. Because Route 9 was between The City of Miami and Opa-Locka in the unincorporated section of Miami, I'll speculate in the late 60's there were few cops to patrol this highway. Although the road was well paved, It was really no man's land. Not much to talk about... Chuck received this car from his father as a graduation present so that meant Chuck had no responsibility or respect. If my memory serves me correctly, we got the car up to 135+ and it sounded like the roof was going to tear away! So he backed it down and we U-turned it toward home.
Interstate 95 ( I-95) runs through Miami, up the state of Florida and with a few exceptions, all the way up the East coast through Maine. Maybe you've gone over the speed limit on I-95 too?

One Saturday night, Chuck and I were on I-95 going North. We had nothing to do that night and returned from meeting friends at the Miami Airport 10 miles away. In a similar situation, two cars were racing and about 4 other cars decided to 'pick up the pace' just to see what was going on. We followed for a mile or two going 75 to 80 and they were so far ahead we lost interest and started to slow down. The speed limit was 60 at the time and we were probably between 60-65. A few Highway Patrol cars sped past us in hot pursuit of the faster cars. We didn't think much of it until we slowed and came over the overpass where a few more Highway Patrol cars were flagging cars over... including us.
This is before they devised radar. I think the cops had to judge the speed you were going simply by their speed. If they were speeding... then so were you! I'm sure there were other methods like timing a car between lines painted on the roadway. A stopwatch and a chart could determine a vehicle speed between two marked points. Anyway, Chuck got pulled over. They claimed he was doing more than 20 miles over the limit and took him to jail. They verified I was licensed and allowed me to follow in his car to the Police sub-station about 5 miles away. He was there for a hour or so before they allowed him to phone his parents. By then it was past midnight and his dad was annoyed to have to come to bail him out.
Chuck decided to go to court and fight this thing... afterall it was the OTHER cars that were racing. When we were pulled over, we were actually doing the speed limit.
I stood next to Chuck in court as his witness. The judge asked his side of the story and Chuck described it much like I told it here, except the judge said... "You say you were going between 60 to 65 at the time... Son, are you aware the speed limit is 60 miles per hour?"
He didn't cut Chuck any slack. He was fined for more than 80 miles per hour like the ticket said.
I was never asked to say a word... not by the judge, not by the arresting officer.
Would I have lied for my friend? At the age of 17... sure, we had nothing to loose.
Would I do the same thing now? (I'll have to ponder that for a while longer)
Do I think Chuck was caught in a setup? Yes. Quite often police have 'stung' people who needed 'a little help' just to be bad. We didn't get into trouble until the 'catalyst' drove past us. The two speeders could possibly have been working for the cops.
That reminds me of the unsuspecting businessman who pulls up at a red light and asks an attractive woman an address he is looking for. Essentially, he's a good guy. Add a little catalyst and she says "Do you need a date" and he says "Huh?" and she replies "I'll suck you off for $20" and before you know it, he's got handcuffs on and is in the backseat of a Police Cruiser going to jail.
My blog took a sudden turn down Mainstreet... but don't ask me to lie to your wife for your whereabouts.
So goes another blog... remember ONE important thing.
Government agencies are all hurting for money. there are way too many budget cuts to go around. Police make money writing tickets.... for ANY reason. You do something wrong... they make money. Not only for them, but the entire court system. They profit off your screwups. Run a red light and get caught... you pay. Some people say the trick is never get caught. This isn't The Dukes of Hazzard. You cannot jump in you muscle car and dodge the Police. If you read one blog tonight that concerns you... watch yourself on the road. Four out of every five drivers is an idiot. Hold your hand up and count to four... that leaves you. Don't be an idiot.

Great Blog, Chan!!!! We used to race on 295 in D.C., just off the beltway, just on the Maryland side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. One night, we all decided to go there, it was just before it was my turn to get up and race for pinkslips, and here come the cops. At the time I had a 65 GTO that we had dropped a 454 in, so we took off like a Bat out of hell, the guy just behind us got caught, but I kept going. (Whew, missed getting a ticket by () that much!

Great blog, chat. I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the time I got caught in a set up, too. It's why I constantly use my cruise control nowadays.
