last night after a nice visit with my daughter and grandsons, i loaded up my little car with 20- 40 pound bags of wood pellets i use to heat my home. it was dark when i got back up here to the mountains so i left the unloading for today.
it's been raining all morning so i let it slide a little while longer. this afternoon i went down to check on the stove, bummer it had run out of fuel. so in a burst of lazy energy i backed the little car down the ramp i use to get the motorcycles in and out of the house. i unloaded the car without even getting wet. i got the stove running and enjoyed it's warmth briefly.
so i'm out in the little car getting ready to put it back in the driveway. i figured i'd use the emergency brake trick i learned in san francisco starting up a hill with a stick transmission. the little car has a diesel motor with plenty of torque and has never been stuck in the 6 years i've been it's caretaker. i gave it a little fuel because of the grade, let out the clutch and i felt it engage i let off the emergency brake. it moved up briefly before it shuddered to a stop. i roll back, yes towards the river 30' behind and 10 below the back of the little car. the back wheels are now on the concrete slab that tops the retaining wall my home is built on. i try it again, it rolls up slowly just above engine idle speed, not wanting to spin the tires and slide into the concrete walls on either side. sigh...it doesn't make it again. the third try is similar. it's now sitting there on the rain soaked dirt ramp, e brake set and wheels blocked. it looks so sad sitting there outside my bedroom window.
it's like he knows the neighbor will laugh as he pulls him out with that big 4 wheel drive truck. i know he'll say, "ken, this wasn't your brightest idea."
i hope he gets home before dark.....wishing i could blame this idea on wally.

I changed from corn to wood pellets last year and am going back to corn. It puts out almost twice the heat and even having to clean it, it worth the extra savings.
1 hundred bushels of corn in my gravity wagon will cost just over $300 compared to 2+ tons of pellets at $230 a ton to heat my place.
You need a winch to pull or a wench to push. Just kidding.

wally shook his head and walked away when he saw the car....he knew i wasn't going anywhere until it moves......
it would be hard to store and keep corn dry here, the thought has crossed my mind.
