We have been seeing the word "Socialism" a lot since healthcare reform has been in the news lately, and I'm wondering if people really know much about the socialist party here. From what I have seen, I think most relate it to like the USSR, or something in some third world country maybe, and do not realize that at one time it was the most viable third party in the US.
These are the party names from 1900, until now Social Democratic Party of America, Socialist Labor Party of America, Socialist Party USA, Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, Social Democrats USA.
It's presidential candidate, Eugene V. Debs, won over 900,000 votes in 1912 and 1920, while the party also elected members of the United States House of Representatives (Victor L. Berger and Meyer London) and numerous state legislators and mayors. In the 1920 election Debs ran for election from prison, and received 913,693 votes. The Socialist Party had endorsed a compulsory healthcare system as early as 1904, and been proponents of it since.
The party had it's share of splits, and reformation, and troubles, such as terroristic bombings, killings etc. Still they ran a presidential candidate until 1956, when their candidate Darlington Hoopes recieved less than 3,000 votes. At that point decisions were made to work in other ways to bring about the changes they wanted to see.
By the late 1960s the most powerful figures in the Socialist Party of America were Max Shachtman and Michael Harrington, who agreed upon a parallel strategy of maintaining the Socialist Party as an independent third party that fielded its own candidates while acting as a pressure group within the Democratic Party. The party itself had become divided into three caucuses. One was the Debs Caucus led by David McReynolds, which wanted to pursue the traditional position of the Socialist Party as an independent political party and held the most strongly "leftist" position within the group. Another was the "centrist" Coalition Caucus led by Michael Harrington, which also had a leftist orientation, but wanted to work within the Democratic Party to pull it to the left. Finally, the "rightist" Unity Caucus led by Max Shachtman were strong supporters of the Lyndon Johnson/"Scoop" Jackson wing of the Democratic Party that supported hawkish anti-Communism abroad and civil rights and the Great Society program domestically!

I wonder if people knew that in countries that have socialized medicine, the mortality rates of people in the age range of 25 to 45 are almost half of the mortality rates here in America. And people who complain that socialized medicine will take away our choice of doctor, havent looked at the in network list of doctors allowed on their HMO. Nor have they had a catastrophic illness where the family was driven into bankruptcy even though they had insurance. It just didn't cover enough of the costs. An 80% coverage still leaves 20% costs. And 20% can add up quickly. Ask anyone who went to Canada and got sick, which medical system they prefer.....OMG I've turned into one of "those" people......runaway!

I wonder when the Americans will realize that they have been force feed communist food for decades now....
Through our schools..movies....television..corrupted news...union dogma....and on and on....
And as far as socialized meds....some of us sacrifice buying fun stuff..outtings...vacations..etc to buy our healthcare plan..
I dont think that paying triple in taxes of what I pay now for my healthcare plan is very smart at all...
Healthcare is a trick to push us towards socialism...Theyve been trying to do it for decades..
But because they have infiltrated schools and colleges..they have BRAINWASHED ageneration of innocents..to young to really understand what life is all about...thus being TRICKED into slavery....and before they figure out what they have done to themselves...IT WILL BE TOO LATE..

There is so much information out there about the socialist parties in the US that it would take pages and pages to try and cover it all. So I just went over it very briefly here, but I think this link to the current political parties in the US would be a good thing to add here. US Political Parties
