Imagine a square box with a bottom & 4 sides; one of the sides has a door that swings out on hinges. There would be only a small step up going thru the open door. I'm guessing that's how he got it. I'm wondering if the kid, along with his older brother, pulled a prank, letting the balloon go & "claiming" the 6 yr old was inside, but actually is hiding somewhere in their yard??

I'm guessing you're right about that iglooo. If hey don't find the kid, wanna bet there's going to be some Colorado state legislation about home-built hot air balloons???

A sibling saw the boy get into the craft Thursday morning. Officials were concerned that the boy may have fallen out of it, an undersheriff said.

oct_cat,If hey don't find the kid, wanna bet there's going to be some Colorado state legislation about home-built hot air balloons??? the problem is...there are lots of things that could hurt the kids and there are lots of laws...the most important thing is the ADULT SUPERVISION.... PLUS....this balloon should have been secured..... it sounded like.....easier than a bicycle.... imagine...if it was a shot gun.....with no lock..... the most important thing is the ADULT SUPERVISION

the most important thing is the ADULT SUPERVISION... kids are kids.... they have biggg bodies....but...no experience.... it is easy that they make mistakes.... they always need ADULT SUPERVISION that is what is really missing..... that is why kids...follow the wrong examples....

Agreed, on the supervision. Especially with things kids can get curious about.

I dont know that it is just kids.... some adults are just curious by nature such as myself and then think about why the parents were building such a balloon that this child had op to fly away in it, right.........

fromscratch, seems like the children are not the top priority, jmo I guess that should change Children should be top top priority What is the point of having children then....not to take care of them......to leave them like....

Looking at the ballon, I'm wondering if it had enough lift to get the boy in the air. Maybe his brother is making it up? Hope so.

But the fate of the boy, identified as Falcon Heene, was unclear after the balloon landed near Keenesburg -- about 60 miles by road from Fort Collins -- at 1:35 p.m. (3:35 p.m. ET). The balloon was in the air for more than an hour and a half.
A sibling said he saw the boy get into the craft Thursday morning, raising concerns that the boy may have fallen out of it, authorities said.

By the time I was 6 years old I was pushing 5' tall...(I was always one of the bigger kids in class)
IF the kid was in the balloon, then I'd be searching the line between the two cities, oh, maybe a path about 2 miles wide, just in case...

I did'nt think the boy was in the balloon.
It's a simple matter of lift calculated by the weight of payload, multiplied by the co-enfficent of volume of heated air vs size of thermal mass for lift.
Of course, taking into acocunt, one each six year old boy who acts like most six year olds.
The odds of successful flight was less than 2.029%
Pretty simple really.

Josuha,I did'nt think the boy was in the balloon. It's a simple matter of lift calculated by the weight of payload, agreed but, the father designed the balloon for a heavier load so, if the balloon would not be able to perform then the design was flawd

so, if the balloon would not be able to perform then the design was flawd Let's give thanks that the balloon design was 'flawed'.
I'm glad to see the boy safe.
That is what counts.
