People don't seem to understand something...

Models do not get fired for being "fat". They get fired for gaining enough weight to no longer fit into the sample sizes at fashion shows or photo shoots. This is how the business works. There are size 2 outfits which are provided by designers for fashion shows and photo shoots. These items are always a size 2 (unless for a plus-size shoot), and it is a lot easier for designers to find a girl who will fit a size 2 than to worry about providing different sizes for different models.

Fashion is a business like anything else. If I work as a surgeon and my hands get mangled in a woodchipper, guess what? I can't be a surgeon anymore...I no longer fit the requirements for that occupation. To be a straight (non-plus-size) fashion model, you need to be a size 2, or you will not fit the samples, which is the crux of your job! It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not people still find this woman attractive...no one is saying if you don't fit a size 2 you're ugly...they're saying if you don't fit a size 2, then you don't fit a size 2. Are we really going to sit around and whine about models being fired for being fat? Give me a break...if you don't fit the requirements for a job, then you don't get that job...it is exactly the same in every field.

Thank you for a more to the point blog than the one I read yesterday which used the Ralph Lauren sacking incident to push their complete and utter dislike of anyone with more than an inch of fat on them.

You're right, if one doesn't have the necessary credentials for the job then it stands to reason they will be fired. However, I think the issue goes much deeper and the reason for the newspaper coverage and debates are because being a size 2 isn't common. The fashion industry hasn't always used waifs to promote their wares, it's a more recent trend ... and what is sad about it is a lot of models starve themselves in order to get and stay in these top jobs. No one's forcing them though, it's their choice.

I think it's fair to say average sized women and larger also feature fairly prominently in modelling, just not at high fashion level. It's not as bad as it used to be, even the fashion industry has to be realistic, there's no point alienating most of the women who will be buying their clothes.

Size 0-2 top models are merely better than coat hangers at displaying the clothing ... and I have heard it argued that the trend for using women with boyish figures is mainly due to the fact so many designers are gay and don't see the female figures as attractive or desirable. Not my view, just something I have heard expressed a number of times and perhaps food for thought.

Sure, you must fit a criteria for every job.........but modeling has the most ridiculous and unrealistic criteria. Especially when the average woman is between a size 10 and 14. That is where the contoversy stems from.

I totally get what you're saying, and I've been saying this to people for years: models have to be as thin as they are because they have to fit the clothes. I don't have to like it, but it's the way it is....

Fashion is obviously not about presenting reality...they are selling you a fantasy, and if a size 2 was not the fantasy that people wanted to see, I have a strong feeling that that fashion industry would be aware of that and would not waste money advertising using that "ideal". I don't fit the ideal standard of beauty, and in fact I think I probably get more negative comments about my appearance than the average sized woman, yet somehow I don't feel pressured to look a certain way...why is that?

Oh yeah...because I don't let another person dictate what I should look like!

Very true. You're right 'though, the models have to be a certain size to fit the samples.

Gonna get in trouble now. Average women are size 10 to 14, true, but they are not looking for average to sell their designs.

Ok..let's use some of your thinking...about fairness.....ever been to the horse
race track, hmmmmmmmm?..ya think some #300 pounder is gonna sit on "Ole
Dan Patch"..and come in the money...geez people. using your analogy..the
"Average Man of 6' weighs in at 190 and up..and there ain't no way..he's ever going to be a jockey..get real.. .the contractor says..these are the parameters for the job..either you fit the requirement..or don't even apply. If you're so bent on the models being skinny..that's because the employer or contractor specifies the job parameters..they ain't selling sizes..they're selling FASHIONS...get the point?? or.are you all saying, that dont' have that right?
