A blog is "indexed" to a person's profile.....it is to be a "reflection" of how that person thinks...and expresses those thoughts...

but....it also "reflects" how others respond to those statements....the comments left by readers....

Some bloggers have people reading their blogs to see what has been stirred up so they can argue in the form of a "comment"...as if it were a forum....

A blog is...should be..like a person thinking outloud...and typing it down...for someone to relate to...to share like thoughts...or to give appreciation for stimulating the thinking process so the reader may in turn write their thought in a blog that they would never have done ...had they not been "connected" or inspired in some way....

and then...there are those that read and will NOT comment... why?

1) blog didn't hold their interest...boring...nonsense...not actually a "blog"...

2)They don't want their name identified on the blogger's blog..for...fear? of what "others" may think??

Then the "symbol only" response...Why?

1) They want their name associated with the blog/subject...just don't want to take time to say anything "meaningful"

2)They are trying to "up the count" on their profile/pic as to "responses" (this makes them look like they are ..."important"...or something...who knows the real why....?

3)Then there are the ones who leave one symbol that is to be interpretated...but correctly to which part of the blog? The whole thing? part only? Idea behind it or the actual heart-rendering effort to expose one's thoughts in public???

the emoticons are great...when several are used together to get an idea over...or one if it is a simple blog and not much need be said in response...

and even a single(or multiple) .(period) can be symbolic by the responder to say something...but even this is open for interpretation....

The single comment rule has been revoked so that a comment can be "clarified" as to make sure what is said is understood or taken in the correct manner in which it was meant....

This also means that an argument can ensue and the blogger's thoughts are askew...so...single/multiple comments...no comment...what is the answer?

The answer my friends, is answering and saying what you feel...if you feel something...say so!

Sometimes a comment can ask a question? Since the OP can also post up.

Sometimes a comment can be a double meaning?

Sometimes a comment can be a message to someone who is not even there?

Sometimes,,, oh,,, to heck with it..... the medication has worn off,,, so I can't keep focused on long blogs. Hell,, ,even the short ones are kicking my ass,,,,,, oh,,, look,,,,,,,,, SHINEY.......

what did you say?

Oh yeah,,, nice blog. Here's a Kudo,,,, I'm going to loose them at midnight, so I want to spend them.

depends on how much time i have, if time is limited i wont read a long blog even if its a very good friend. sometimes i want to comment a the end, especially with my favorite bloggers. i will always keep an eye open for my favorite bloggers, you are one of them doll

but sometimes i am not around for a few days and dont get read. I also often give kudos to the up and comers, not the skilled writers... for they have enough. I love to encourage.

if i cant see a point to a blog i wont comment, sometimes i can see the point to a blog but it doesnt concern me, then i wont comment. and some people dont like me so i dont care to comment.

That's happened to me; I think some people are allergic to cats!

I just read a blog this morning & I could have commented because I went thru something very similar to what the op is going thru right now. But I opted to privately email her instead, because some thoughts are just better off kept private, IMO

You bring up some valid points, but sometimes people blog just to get a feeling down on "paper" . . . a way of letting it out. I don't think everyone who writes a blog necessarily does it with the purpose of eliciting comments.

Good thoughts to ponder. I am rarely on anymore so I don't get to read a great deal of blogs.

When I only leave a symbol, I do so when the blog has been so heartfelt that anything I would say would minimize the writers message. I simply leave a "~*~" and a kudo to back it up.

It shows that i read the blog, it moved me, and not only that...but it was exceptional. Those are also the times when I would prefer not to make a lengthy statement and take away from the posters intent. If I got something grand out of it...it is not up to me to blather on about it and simply their own profound message.

there are those (when I do have time) that I DO purposely skip over. Those are the bloggers that have consistently shown me that we have nothing in common. so why read it, get riled up and post my own point of view? it is an extension of themselves after all.

As a sometime blogger myself, some of the best comment I receive are through private email and never make it onto my blog. I value those quite highly as well. When someone chooses to share something with me on a more personal basis, I consider that a compliment....even if it's negative.

Thanks for a thought provoking blog!

I rarely share anything constructive, and usually leave a totally random comment or an insincere insult.

I agree with you to a point, but sometimes I simply don't have anything to add because the blog is perfect all by itself, or because other people have already added what I was thinking ... Sometimes I enjoyed the blog for one reason or another but can't think of something appropriate to say. In the past I would simply move on without leaving a comment but I think it's nice to let the person know how often we read their stuff. If I think I have something to add to the points made in the blog or they have inspired me to respond in a particular way I can sometimes get carried away and almost end up leaving another blog as a comment ... but other times I might just be stuck for words ... so I leave a kiss or a thumbs up or a hug ... whatever I feel appropriate at the time.

Fran you are a "gem" of a blogger.......one that I didn't see until now. I will enjoy reading the rest of your blogs.....they really are thought provoking and that is a good thing!
