"We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered. " - Tom Stoppard Deep thoughts on a rather cold and rainy day .. One of my favorite new shows is "Criminal Minds" .. not only because of *yum* Shamar Moore, but because it gives me a glimpse into the psyche of some people I would hope to avoid in my time here on earth.
I've been around the block enough times to have heard the popular phrase used by people who commit unspeakable and gruesome acts .. "he/she made me do it", "I was abused", "I was constantly misunderstood and it infuriated me". Really???? While I do understand that there are acts perpetrated by others that push us to that brink of the abyss we hope never to fall into.. the one full of red rage, of anger, of frustration that makes our blood boil.. I also see the flip side of those excuses.. I see those who have suffered unmerciful acts of unjustice who have been able to reach deep within and find a seed of forgiveness, of hope in breaking that circle of pain, of abuse, of vengeance.
I think I watch these types of shows so that I can, hopefully, better spot the warning signals of toxic individuals, of sociopaths who have nurtured that spot inside them that holds onto the pain, fosters the anger and revels in the afterbath of reciprocity of hurt.
Toxic people come in all degrees.. there are some that are toxic with words .. they can wield those daggers and toss them with such aplume that they always hit their mark... they cut others, they stab them repeatedly and deeply with slashing remarks about others shortcomings. I had cause to speak with another of my colleagues about this type of individual this week. They say things that they cannot and will not be proven and that they know are far from the truth. I used to wonder why this is, but after talking with so many people that deal with this type, we (the majority) of us have come to the conclusion that those that spew this toxic venom do so because they have nothing and no one in their lives that matter or can make them feel loved, so in order to compensate for that lack thereof, they step on, grind others into the ground. Misery, indeed, does love company.
The next time we come to a bridge in our lives, wouldn't it be nice if we actually took some time contemplating our journey across them before we strike that match and toss it behind us?
And for gramps: A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool.. After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split. The waitress asked kindly, 'Crushed nuts?' 'No,' he replied, 'Arthritis.'
Say good night Gracie.. and to you also Mrs. Calabash .. Wherever you may be!!!
