This morning began like most other mornings for me here in the country, our house set amongst fields and neighbours in waving distance.

Rome and Caesar wanted out after their usual gobble of their breakfast, (how they do that so fast I'll never know)

Then on goes my kettle for some English tea, with just a drop of milk and no sugar.. then I head off to the comp to check out the new blogs and mail some friends...

After commenting and mailing, I remembered my hotmail so went off to read news from whoever had kindly dropped me a line over night, usually ones from the UK.

The first one I see is from my dad, subject.. 'Apartment'.

Before I left Portugal to live here, I left my father with power of attorney so he could sell my apartment for me when a buyer came along, so my first thought was "Great! we've got a buyer!"

What I read was not what I expected at all.

He firstly explains how the market hasnt picked up yet there, and how property is still barely moving.... ok so far.. yeah I knew that....

Then goes on to say...

...."But the agent suggested renting, I know you didnt want to rent, but Ive met the couple and they are a seemingly decent pair."

Rented out my apartment??

My face dropped, I took a sip of tea and read on...

"Iv'e been putting the rent in your account here, and you have more than enough to go to the UK for your trip now!"

My apartment had been my income when I lived there, I lived with dad and rented it out, but when I went to come here, I didnt renew any tenants when the last ones moved out as I wanted to sell it.

Dad and I had completely redecorated the place, it looked lovely when it was all finished, just like a show home, all ready for someone to make an offer!

But now someones in there.. living there.. that wasn't my plan at all.

The good news of course is that I can now go to the UK and Portugal as originally planned...

The bad news is that now people are living in there I cant sell it.

I have totally mixed feelings about the whole thing.

I know dad was doing what he felt was in my interest, but I had plans with what I was going to do with the money.

In Portugal, buyers dont like buying property with tenants, I came across this many times before when I tried to sell with renters in there.

I dont know whether to be happy that I can go on my trip, or feel sad that all my plans have gone west.

I know I should feel lucky that I own property at all.. and that I have a dad that looks out for me...

But its times like this when all my should's get washed away with a stream of mixed emotions.

Just be glad you have the extra money and get to see your dad. Maybe, you guys can talk it over and come up with a logical solution. I wish my house was rentable. I would love the extra income, not to mention an excuse to move to where my freinds and family are. Goodluck.

I'm sorry to hear that, it does sound like you have mixed emotions for sure. Not exactly "bad" news but then again not really the good news you wanted to hear. You always seem to have a positive outlook so if there's a silver lining I'm sure you'll find it! Have a great day....

I'm glad you are going to be able to go on & take your trip.
As for the apartment, perhaps you might maintain the renters for a while & when it becomes evident that the market for sales has picked back up, as them to move & put it back up for sale?

things always happen for a reason. let it go doll. anyway money is unstable these days and that will have an affect on land values. just be patient, how long is the lease?

It's probably better off let for now, until the market picks up and when it does, perhaps a prospective buyer will jump at the chance, even with tennants, knowing there will be some fast profit.

At least this way, the value will go up again and you won't be at such of a loss.

BTW...see you in Bath in November.
