Rita was sixteen years, hazel eyes and chestnut hair
She really made the Woolworth counter shine
Eddie was a sweet romancer, and a darn good dancer
They'd waltz the aisles of the five and dime

Dance a little closer to me, dance a little closer now
Dance a little closer tonight
Dance a little closer to me, 'cause it's closing time
And love's on sale tonight at this five and dime

Nancy Griffith

Last night I substituted on bass with a classic rock band over at the Hideaway, which is a biker bar back up in the "hood". It is hidden away from most normal people, so you'd have to know where it is, ya just don't go driving around and stumble on it.

You will probably stumble out however. Because being a stranger or not, you will have more drinks bought for you than you would normally buy yourself. Just a bunch of great folks.

My band plays there too, and in the 4 years I have been doing that, there has never been even a hint of an argument, much less a fight. However, most of the folks that hang out there are quite scary looking, and I think it might be a intimidating place to go, if ya didn't already know about it.

I like to watch people, especially while I am playing. I enjoy watching people dance. To watch us dance is to hear our hearts speak.

There are some REALLY interesting styles out there, I am here to tell ya. It's mostly the men who have developed their own sort of semi secret personal moves, and the girls seem to enjoy trying to figure out what the heck those moves are, and what their partner is going to do next. The girls enjoy it, because they are invariably smiling. The men seem to concentrate more, but smile after the song is over. After all...this is not a ballroom, nor a country music saloon, where dancing is easy. This is trying to dance to Led Zep...Hendrix...Beatles...Janis and so on. This does take a bit of creativity.

I love to play....nothing compares...but I envy the dancers too. I used to dance all the time, but lately I have not been much in the mood. It does help to have a partner too...So it's been a couple years I guess. At least ....I am not gonna think about that now.

Last night I figured something out. You don't really need a partner in order to dance. I knew this once....but had forgotten it.

I watched a older gentleman, holding his drink, eyes closed, leaning against a wall, and flying his airplane, to the music. That's what it looked like. It was so funny. And he did it for hours. Steering his imaginary aircraft through all sorts of gentle turns, sudden dives, and last minute pull outs, just avoiding a cataclysmic crash at the last second. And then heading it straight up, back into the safety of the clouds and open sky.

Every once in a while, a girl would go ask him to dance, and would fly all around her, and the room....then back to his spot on the wall.

I kept exchanging glances with the lead singer and the guitar player, all of us hardly able to keep from laughing. I thought about Elaine on Seinfeld and the way she danced....this guy had her beat by a mile.

Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another. There is no "set in stone" style. There is a little bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good, all around. This guy made my night last night. I think he did that for a lot of us who were there ....

Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Nobody is gonna come up and tell you to stop dancing because you suck. It's like wearing bright yellow socks with white pants. It may look funny, but no one is gonna say you can't do that.

I once danced in the rain...it was amazing and I will never forget it...ever. But no one came up to us and said we were crazy, or that we couldn't do that. It was one of my very favorite dances. If there was anyone watching, I bet they were wishing they were us.

Fred Astaire was a very popular guy back in the heyday of dancing..he was amazing....but ya know? Think about it...

Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels. I forget who said that....but it is impressive.

So...last night I watched a man dance...I saw his heart, and it was a good one. He left when the music was over and not a minute before. He thanked us over and over, and told us just how much he enjoyed our music.

But he didn't have to do that. He didn't have to say a word. We already knew.

So the next time you are wondering if anyone might notice if you get up and start dancing? Yeah...someone will notice.

Do it anyway.

Besides, I like to watch.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music. ~ Nietzsche

Stay tuned

Very sweet reminder.

They even keep their knives away when a Welsh woman walks into the bar and asks a dike if she's a Hippy or a Redneck, but it's not something I would advise.
It's not an intimidating place at all.

There is nothing like music and dancing to lift your spirits .. I can feel horrible .. tired and gruppy and hear a peppy song with a good beat and great words especially the ones that take you back some where in time .. and it changes my mood completely.. I'm a car dancer .. driving back and forth to work .. people passing probably thinks I've lost it .. but I don't care cause in reality .. I have found it .. the bridge from feeling bad to feeling good.

Sing like nobody is listening

ohhhh I want to be dancing...
real dancing..
with someone holding me close...
so close I can feel his heart beat...
my body following his every move...
leading me so eptly that I glide as if I am part of his body...
or he is part of mine...
one united with music..
.the beat ..
the sounds...
the thoughts....

well....

I can dream can't I???
