I was going to comment on someone else's blog, but then my comment seemed to turn into more of a blog of my own, all by itself.
For a lot of years, I listened to a DJ in Topeka, an older fellow, who hosted the Merle Blair Sunday Show on a local radio station. It usually centered around some theme, such as "Summertime" or any of the holidays. And even though Mr. Blair never knew I was listening, I was, and what he sometimes said sometimes made a difference. He ended every show with the same song. I think the version he played every Sunday was by Tennessee Ernie Ford. I can't find that one online, but I found this one: Glen Payne Written in 1945 by Alma Bazel Androzzo, made famous by Mahalia Jackson, a hit in 1951 for Irish tenor Joseph Locke
If I Can Help Somebody
If I can help somebody, as I pass along, If I can cheer somebody, with a word or song, If I can show somebody, how they're travelling wrong, Then my living shall not be in vain.
Chorus: My living shall not be in vain, Then my living shall not be in vain If I can help somebody, as I pass along, Then my living shall not be in vain.
If I can do my duty, as a good man ought, If I can bring back beauty, to a world up-wrought, If I can spread love's message, as the Master taught, Then my living shall not be in vain.
Now,thow who know me, know I'm not particularly religious. That this is considered a gospel song is really of little importance. If my words are incentive for one person to seek and find a greater truth of a thing, to consider things in a way they had never considered them before, in a way that benefits them or helps them help others, whether I know it or not, if I have made a difference, it was worth the effort. But by letting lies and disinformation or attitudes I think are morally wrong be the only ones that are being heard, then my time has been in vain.
I understood a long time ago that my role was apparently not to radically change the world. At least not directly. But.. my hope is still to change the world for the better in at least some small way.
