Skulls are humanity's foremost symbol of death, and a powerful icon in the visual vocabularies of cultures all over the globe. Thirteen crystal skulls of apparently ancient origin have been found in parts of Mexico, Central America and South America, comprising one of the most fascinating subjects of 20th Century archaeology. These skulls, found near the ancient ruins of Mayan and Aztec civilizations (with some evidence linking the skulls with past civilization in Peru) are a mystery as profound as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Nazca Lines of Peru, or Stonehenge. Some of the skulls are believed to be between 5,000 and 36,000 years old.
Many indigenous people speak of their remarkable magical and healing properties, but nobody really knows where they came from or what they were used for. Were they left behind after the destruction of a previous world, such as Atlantis? Are they simply ingenious modern fakes or can they really enable us to see deeply into the past and predict the future?
Much research is currently being done on the skulls. However, their origin is still a baffling mystery. They seem to defy logic. Everything that is known about lapidary work indicates that the skulls should have been shattered fractured or fallen apart when carved. The most widely celebrated and mysterious crystal skull is the Mitchell-Hedges Skull, for at least two good reasons. First, it is very similar in form to an actual human skull, even featuring a fitted removable jawbone. Most known crystal skulls are of a more stylized structure, often with unrealistic features and teeth that are simply etched onto a single skull piece.
The Mitchell-Hedges skull is made of clear quartz crystal, and both cranium and mandible are believed to have come from the same solid block. It weighs 11.7 pounds and is about five inches high, five inches wide, and seven inches long. Except for slight anomalies in the temples and cheekbones, it is a virtually anatomically correct replica of a human skull. Because of its small size and other characteristics, it is thought more closely to resemble a female skull -- and this has led some to refer to the Mitchell-Hedges skull as a "she."
Regardless of any unearthly properties the crystal skulls may or may not possess, the question remains: where did they come from? There are countless hypotheses that they are the legacy of some higher intelligence. Many believe they were created by extraterrestrials or beings in Atlantis or Lemuria. One elaborate theory maintains that the skulls were left behind by a sophisticated Inner Earth society which lives at the hollow center of our planet, and there are thirteen "master skulls" which contain the history of these people.
Initially only 12 skulls existed and most “skull theorists” believed that when the 13th was found and reunited with the other twelve; the secrets of the universe would be revealed. The 13 skulls have NEVER been gathered together to see what would happen….HMMMM…….interesting.
Some believe that the ancient Crystal Skulls are the computers of the ancients; and that they contain important information that will help humanity pass through a current series of challenges to take us into a Golden Age.
NOTE: Much of this info has been gathered from books I have used for research, but some is from the internet.

Brilliantly written and most interesting. I have a collection of 10 paperbacks written back in the '70's concerning ancient aliens from somewhere in the universe. The one most interesting is "The Spaceships of Ezekiel" with descriptions and drawings of what Ezekiel saw and experienced with the words he had to work with back then. It can really become mind boggling. There is so much physical evicence on every continent, theres no doubt in my mind that extraterestial life has existed.

You forgot to mention the craftmanship and flawlessness of the skulls themselves. As for who what or where they came from, no clue.

What about the movie? I liked that movie about the skulls. Supposedly fiction.
I have had the pleasure of seeing Max and one other which I do not think is one of the 13 but energetic as all get out regardless.

I have seen the figures at Nazca, and without a doubt they are made to be viewed from the aair.
The Ball Field near Cuzco is made of huge blocks, and built to closer tolerances than modern freewaay bridges.
Gave you ever studied the hundred of miles of square caves with fused walls in Peru?
I have no doubt there have been other advanced civilizations, unknown to us. The original Incas were all descendents of four highly developed people who walked out of a cave in Peru, physically different than the native people. They were white people with long thin faces and red beards (the three men). They intermaried among the descendants of the three men and one woman. They were similar to the "Long Ears" people who once ruled Easter Island.
There is so much to learn of our world, and so much of it not in books.

What happened to the ancients? Did they pass through? Just some more gibberish Hog wash like the Da Vinci Code. I love mysteries like thest skulls and lots of others. They are great for entertainment but of little values to me otherwise. I believe the City of Atlantis, if that is what it might have been called, sank under the ocean during Noah's Flood. We know the surface of the earth changed for sure for some reason back in time. If you believe the Bible as I do, that would explain why tons of man made structures have been found on the bottom of the Ocean all over the world, wouldn't it? Or is that just too simple? We have no idea how far the world had progressed before the flood. I live in a mountainous area and you can find sea animal fossell remains in the rocks. It appears to me that the tops of these mountains were once the bottom of an ocean, or am I nuts? There was a time when people believed the ancient art of making Indian Arrow Heads, out of flint was a lost art until they found out from the indians that they did not use fire, heat and water to chip the stones but used the antler of a deer to chip the arrow head out of a piece of flint. I have a friend that can make you an official, very rare old indian arrow head in just a few minutes, only thing, he is of English decent and learned the skill from a Chocktaw Indian. Texan tourist once bought his artifacts as original and now there is a penalty, I believe, for making and claiming the new ones are authentic when actually they are brand new. These skulls are real, but I'll bet, if you could ask one of the makers how he did it, it would be quite simple. Maybe like the indians, Heat a small portion of the stone, dip a straw in cold water and drop it on the hot spot and bang a chip would drop off. That is not how they did it at all, they used a point off a deer horn to chip the stone. Everything can be explained if you gather enough information. I would also wager that if you got the 13 skulls togethe, and that might not be all of them, Nothing would happen at all. Might be an interesting experiment though.

I agree vet..probably a hoax....
People are ripe for hoaxes these days...with the big planet line up thats to come in 2012...just like crop circles....UFO's...nothing ever proved...just 'mysteries'.
Just like Y-2K....Harmonic Convergence...nothing is going to happen....
Humans just love mysteries...
They are fun I guess...keeps the imagination busy...

The Mountains just north of where I live produce some of the finest Quartz the world has to offer. It is dug and exported the world over to be made into parts for watches, healing devices, etc. You can buy right off the table at the road side clip joints, figurines of angels, animals, birds and countless other things. Most made in China from imported Arkansas, USA clear Quarts mined here shipped there and returned here. I don't know how they sculpt it but they do. Diamonds should shatter when they are struck by a metal tool and some do but look at what can be accomplished with them. I have seen and can see some large Quartz formations and the only thing that intrigues me about the sculls is the size of the formation they were constructed from. If I owned one of them I would spend a lot of time trying to get all together and crated this portal, kinda like Indiana Jones, and I could just just cross on over and forget about death, I suppose. Give me something concrete and I am good to go, like the fact that Israel exists again today after nearly 2000 years as the Bible said It would, many times, and then I would be impressed. There are some who believe the people of Atlantis used Quartz to power their machines and we know that it does focus light and is used in watches to keep time, but I would say uranium would be more apt to create a door to somewhere else if possible. Look at the power generated by it. I like mysteries and am somewhat of a dreamer and have been working on a contraption that runs on its own energy with no out side power and still think is is possible at least on paper. Maybe someday I shall get it to work, but for now it is only a theory. Thanks for your Blog.

Fascinating blog and comments too ... I was rivetted and want to know more. I was excited to see we have one of the skulls at the British Museum not far from me in London.
