This is a little story about me, and a bike ride when I was 10. I was with the only friend I had back then. Her family lived on the same road and we were more like sisters than friends..... sharing many day trips together to the carnival, the park, in to the woods while having a picnic, etc. We also had gone on many bike rides together around our area.... some lasting for hours.

Our time together was ALWAYS an adventure to say the least.

Well this particular time, it was twilight time and we were talking and riding as we always did. I happened to look up and see a group of birds, and I mentioned it to my friend. We thought it was odd to see "birds" as the sun was setting. OH, it was summer by the way, so we were not so much on a time schedule.

Anyway, we noticed that the "birds" were flying unlike any birds we had seen in the past and quickly realized they were bats!!!!!!
Well, we decided to separate then and go straight home, she in one direction to her house, and me to the other....

Of course, we did not acclomplish that so easily. It was all I could do to stay on that bike and keep peddling home, cause the bats were getting pretty close, for whatever reason I am STILL unclear.

This next part sounds strange too, but one bat actually ran his claws through my hair as he passed over me, It made my skin crawl and every hair on my body stand on end, and that experience made me throw the bike down and run home screaming!!!!!!!!!!! I went hurriedly in to the house telling my mother that there were bats and that my bike was still laying in the road. SHE was NOT happy, but went to get the bike anyway.

It turns out that there was an abandoned building nearby with broken windows and it was infested with bats.... many, many, bats. Ever since that night, bats have not been my favorite animal.... I know they do have their purpose, and have an unfounded bad reputation, but I am glad that night is behind me.

That event would creep any person out, child or an adult, damn.

When I was little we use to try and hit bats with stones, out of thousands of throws, I hit two.

Yes, I know it was wrong, I was a kid.

That's strange, as bats usually have a keen sense of direction, & are timid around humans. Wow... I would have been petrified too.

I've always thought bats were pretty cool. I've "lived" with them since I was young . . . first everytime we went to our cottage up north we usually spent a few minutes chasing & catching them in butterfly nets & releasing them outside (great mosquito traps!!).
And in my previously owned house, it was a common ocurrence to wake in the middle of the night with a couple of my cats jumping around, chasing bats in the bedroom.
They are really fascinating mammals if one has the opportunity to see them live & up close as I have.

My aunt and uncle used to have a farm, and I remember my cousin saved a baby bat that he found. Turned out to be a good pet actually. Feels weird letting them hang off your finger..their little claws don't quite dig in, but, they have a grip.

But yes, what happened to you, that would have been creepy.

oh syb...bats are often rabid and when so...DON'T act normal...so you were very lucky....

they are fascinating animals and I taught a unit on them to my students...I didn't realize there were so many different species....

It is against the law to kill one here...when one enters a classroom by accident...we have to get animal control to come "safely capture " it....
