There is a place here in Arkansas.........

It's finder's keepers at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The only public diamond mine in the world, Crater of Diamonds offers you a one-of-a-kind adventure - the opportunity to hunt for real diamonds and to keep any you find.

You'll search over a 37-acre plowed field - the eroded surface of an ancient, gem-bearing volcanic pipe. Begin your diamond hunting adventure at the visitor center featuring exhibits and an audio/visual program that explains the area's geology and offers tips on recognizing diamonds in the rough.

Since diamonds were first discovered on the site in 1906, over 75,000 diamonds have been unearthed. The Park offers 59 Class A campsites, picnic sites, a summertime café, laundry, gift shop, hiking trails, interpretive programs and a water play area.

When John Huddleston plucked two diamonds from the greenish-colored dirt of his farm, a hysteria known as "diamond fever" ensued. Although the excitement has since waned, interest in Arkansas's diamond mine remains high. About 60,000 people come to Huddleston's old farm site, now the Crater of Diamonds State Park, each year to search for these precious gems. The crater is the only diamond mine in the world where the public can pay a fee to dig and keep any gems they find.

"A Kiss on the wrist may be quite continental.... BUT Diamonds are a girls best friend"

We have the same thing in the mountains of NC except the gems are Rubies...They call the area "Ruby Valley" . I bought a piece of property nearby where there was little mineral pick axes on the map...and everytime I go to the little town where the property is located...the elderly men in coveralls that sit on the town benches in the sun....ask .....if I have found the BIG Ruby yet? I just laugh..but I have seen some very large rubies in the gems shops surrounding the town..

Perhaps mining is in my future..

Hey Bond: I live about 25 miles from the Park. I tell ladies I meet, if we get serious and feel the need of a diamond, I will furnish her with a bucket and a shovel and she can dig her own. Just Kidding. 70,000 diamonds found and 60.000 visitors a year, Figure your odds of being one of the luck ones. The average of finds usually figures about one a day or about 400 a year. The last day I was there 4 were found. I found none, as is the case every time I go. I have to admit I am not a very eager diamond miner though. It is a fun outing with a special friend and a picnic lunch you can enjoy at a table the park provides.

I have never been there myself. But I have spoken to people who go frequently. They told me the best time to go is after a rain, because they till/disk up the field after the rain to make the soil more loose.

That is true as was the case yestarday, some guy found one, yellow brown that weighed almost 3 caret. It is raining today and they plowed the fields early this week and tomorrow and this weekend is supposed to be sunny, the rain will wash the diamonds and the sun will make them sparkle. Should be several finds this weekend. It would be good to be there just after the sun comes out tomorrow and before l too many people have stomped around. Just pick an area and cover it slowly without digging, just look for the ones on top of the ground. Now ain't this great, advice coming from one that has never found one. Good eyes or glasses are a must. You will find many shiny stones, place them in a cup or bucket, they have gemologists on hand to inspect and tell you what minerals you have found and there are many there including quartz and other jewelry quality stones to be found and identified.

Ive always wanted to go to Crater of Diamonds. I planned a trip last year but decided to go to the Dominican Republic instead. I would have rather gone to Arkansas.

I hope to go one day
