many want reparations for those who died of hiv and a.i.d.s.
or other preventable diseases. africans want reparations
for slavery, as do countless other ethnic and racial groups
who are still slaves today, even de facto slavery. well
they could sue god to get their reparations. i know someone
who did and won. now collecting the money she won in the lawsuit
is another story entirely. you read about all those monetary damgaes
in lawsuits. guess what--the check is in the mail. how much
do they really collect? none. it mostly goes to the lawyers
if they get anything at all. a fool and their money are soon parted.
so is a woman and her legs. and so back to bed to read 'how to
stay in bed and make $trillions'. lolol

Actually, by law in most states, the winning party receives two-thirds of the damages. If you enter into a civil law suit that is predicated on receipt of a settlement as payment, you sign an agreement, which limits the attorneys to 1/3.

roman polanski was ordered to pay 700 thousand dollars
to the girl he molested when she was 13, a few years
after he was convicted of it. he has never paid
a cent of it. if people obeyed the laws, the world
would probably be a nice place. however, as you
notice everyday, even though its against the law
to drive over 65 mph on the freeway, people whiz
by at 80 mph quite a bit. and the zillion and
one other laws? they are broken every day also.
if you sue someone for sixty million dollars
who is homeless, how do you expect to collect the money??

I thought slavery reparations were in fact, fact. But I did a little digging before I posted; HR 40 never was passed into law when it was brought forward in 1999. I guess I got 'misled' by the Family Guy episode where Peter discovers he has black roots and gets a crazy amount of money from his father-in-law. Along the way to finding info on HR40, I saw a lot of talk about a hundred times more than Michael Richards got in trouble for, from the n-word to the n-oose word, and in between.
(I also, some time ago, felt the need to run a google check in context to another event, check whether it's an option for the military to disobey 'illegal orders' in this day and age. I know it was a point used in the Babylon 5 season where John Sheridan's ship met those of the Shadow's catspaw, President Clark. Current interpretations of the law are less than clear. Non-news TV isn't where I get my info but it can be a starting off point)
About the only reparations I know for sure were to the Japanese-Americans (and Japanese -Canadians). Considering how fanatical the actual Japanese were, I'm not -totally- sure it was a bad idea in its time; it definitely could have been handled better, like keeping their property in quarantine for the duration of the war. And it seems peculiar the Japanese weren't held to account for war crimes as the Germans were. Maybe the idea was people who look like us (Germans) are more accountable than people who aren't. But it's done and probably for the best.
Like I say, in its time. My grandparents had a casual antisemitism that wouldn't fly today. It wasn't until after WW2 that it was no longer socially acceptable and it probably didn't happen overnight.
Also, reparations (compensation is more like what was reluctantly given to the WW1 veterans for the pay change during service, the 'Bonus Army', after much tail-dragging, being called Communists by Hoover and MacArthur and having been met in their protest with cavalry, bayonets, gunfire, gas and tanks) were given to the surviving of 2000-3000 Canadian veterans who were used as uninformed guinea pigs for mustard gas experiments during WW2 after covering it up with the official secrets act until the late 80's.
