When I was born at 04.30 in the morning and 3 weeks late, my parents still hadn’t decided what to call me.
I arrived a deep shade of pink, the midwife told my mother I was as red as a cherry, my parents took up on the name and I was Christened Cherry.

But going through school years with a name like Cherry, was of great amusement for my friends, I think I was called every fruit under the sun, everything from apple to orange, I didn’t mind, it was all in fun, my mother was more irritated by it than I was.

Then in my adult years, I am called Sherry, Sheryl, Cheryl, Cherylyn , Sherylyn, everything but Cherry, and the amount of people who ask me how to spell it never ceases to amaze me.
So now, when telling officials my name for forms etc, I say... “Cherry, as in the fruit.”

My nicknames I am called by friends and family are either Cherubs or Cherrums.

Nick names have always been an interest to me, how they got that name, and some stories behind them can be quite amusing.

My youngest, is nicknamed ‘Splodge’. Because when she was little at pre school she painted with just splodges of paint.
She’s 18 now, and I still call her Splodge. She doesn’t mind, or at least she’s never said so.

My mother’s nickname is Annie, an elongation of her real name Ann, Its funny to think that my grandmother named her Ann so no-one could shorten it... they didn’t.
I suppose she didn’t guess that people would make it longer!

Gregg is often called Greggipoo by the ladies, I think I am more irritated by it than he is.

And what people call members of their family is quite varied and interesting too, I remember a school friend calling her Granddad ‘Pappy’, I always called mine ‘Gramps’
Mothers have different names too it seems, I call my mum ‘Ma’, I don’t actually know when that started or why, as its more common to call ones mother ‘Mum in the UK, or Mam in certain parts.

Nicknames for the most part are terms of endearment, some stick through the years and others fade out.
I was talking to my friend the other day, I call her ‘Bobbilinx’, she says I am the only one that calls her by that name, well.. I have to be unique of course!

The ones that stick, I always feel are names that identify with us more than anything else, names that reflect our personalities.

I opened a mail this morning, from a friend in the UK, she started her mail with

“Hi Cherrums”

I couldn’t help but smile.

I have been called Sylvia, many, many times, as well as sYbil (pronounced with the Y making an I sound}, and Syb often, as I am on here.

There was a German man years ago that could not pronounce Sybil and called me Sweeble, and a spanish one that called me sylvoija (spelling) and it means "little onion."

I called my maternal grandpa "Poppy" and my paternal one "Grandaddy"

Yes names are a funny thing... especially nicknames.

If you think of another one for me... please let me know!!

When my son decided to arrive 4 weeks early we weren't prepared with a name yet; but with hospitals being how they are, we HAD to tell them a name for their records right away. So we chose Alexander.

Upon seeing this tiny 5lb baby for the first time, my dad looked at him, smiled and said "Alexander the miniscule."
I dare not call my son that now as he towers over me!

Great blog....fun one, too.

I have several nick names myself.
Some people call me Mel, some call me Liss.
More often than not, online I am referred to as "Miss" which I don't mind.
Some do call me Missy though & I have to say I an not particularly fond of that at all.
My family nic for the past several years has been Sissy.
It all started when I was small with a cousin the same age, who could not pronounce my proper name. My grandfather started calling me "Sissa." My niece & nephew called me that when they came along, too. My niece, now 28 y/o, still calls me that on occasion, but it was her little girl who, instead of calling me Sissa, started calling me Sissy......

I don't really care too much what anyone calls me as long as they do!

I remember growing up being called "puter nickle" and was years later that I realized it was "pewter nickle"...meaning not real metal...but false....and I have no idea where Grand dad came up with it....

My younger sister swore Mama named me Fran Sand cause when she would call me it sounded like that...and we did live in West Texas with all the sand blowing....lol so I just call myself Fran....

and BTW...my daughter was a month late...she wouldn't be born till she weighed EXACTLY 7 lbs and EXACTLY 20 in long....the PERFECTIONIST she is ...began before birth... (dr said between 18 to 21 in and 6 to 8 lbs was normal...)

she went into hibernation right before Halloween and was born Tues before Thanksgiving one yr....from over 8 lbs til 7 lbs...even! Stubborn too!...

Happy Halloween!

My mother's favorite movie was "The Song of Bernadette" starring Jennifer Jones.
It was a decision between Bernadette & Jennifer.
So very happy with Mom's choice.

People would try to call me Jenny & she would lash into them...
"If I had wanted her to be called Jenny... I would have named her Jenny!!!
Her name is Jennifer!!!"

Only one of my 5 children use a nick-name & it was planned that she be
called Maggie after my grandmother who was Margaret known as Maggie.

BTW, I don't mind being called Jen but no one had better ever call me Jenny!!!!
