I have noticed that when I access my mail folders, nearly every web page, and even this page as I sit here typing this, contains an ad of some kind for the "Question 1" in Maine regarding revoking gay marriage in that state and is asking for donations to stop the scourge of "wealthy homosexuals with unlimited resources" trying to defeat this cause. Now, I'm not web-savvy in a lot of ways, so I don't know if a website can determine who does and doesn't advertise on their pages. If they can, then I'm disappointed that a place like MD, where there are people of every faith, political views, AND sexual preference, could let ads like these be on their pages.

I believe they are all google ads. It's a way of MD being able to keep this site up by allowing google to advertize. I don't think MD has a say in what is advertized. But if you really don't like it, become a paying member.

MD certainly has a say in who advertises. This is not a pop-up, but a banner ad that a group bought and paid for.
I am also very disappointed in the appearance of this ad. MD is supposed to be open to all, including LGBT.

Whether we like the banner or not, as long as the words on the ad or banner are not *offensive*, organizations can buy the ad space. And that money keeps our site open.
We, who disagree with the message can just ignore it, as I do....as I know MD is
open to ALL!

Banner ads...what banner ads? Oh, you mean those things up there? I hadn't noticed any of them til you pointed them out. I've grown so accustomed to ignoring them I don't even see them anymore until someone says "whats with that banner ad for Herpes...etc".
Back to the ignoring board...this might take a few days again.....

Although there are some banner ads that a website owner may sign up for, often times the owner of the site DOES NOT have control over what ads come up on the page..... the people that produce the ad, type up key words that go with their ad....... {set that aside a minute} ........ The owner of the website signs up for ads to be placed on their site, whether it be google or something else........ THEN, as we type content onto the pages of MD and "trigger" those key words, ads generate onto the pages accordingly. SO, many times, what WE type onto this site is what determines what ads come up.
NEXT...... ads work in different ways as to how they generate money for a site, but one basic way is.... when you click on an ad, it generates a few cents {with each click} for the site owner. If the ads weren't there, and we never clicked on any of them the free site would eventually have to close down, because, just like us, they have bills to pay, mouths to feed, cars to run, moderators to pay, etc. As Tiram said, as long as the ads aren't offensive [generally speaking], they are a small price to pay for enjoying this site for free.
Also... some ads provide money for the site, not on *clicks* but when you purchase from them THROUGH this site.... meaning, if you click on an ad, then purchase something from them while you are on their site through this site, then this site gets either a predetermined amount {such as .50 to a $1.00 or so) or a small percentage of the sale. Running this website is the site owners/mods means of income, livelihood, their job........ and if we expect them to be sitting here keeping watch over the trolls and trouble makers, then we need to be supportive and not worry about what ads are coming onto the screen. And actively recruiting people onto this site wouldn't hurt either.
Good blog, and good observation, you could be right in some way, but I haven't seen any of those ads yet, you have me curious.

I do realize that websites need to make money, and normally I don't have problems with the banner ads, and, like Tiramisu4u, I can ignore them. It just struck me as odd to see these on this particular website. And thanks for the technical info, tentfire. You answered part of my question.
