This year's X-Factor competition has two contestants from my home county of Essex.

My personal favourite is cheeky call centre operative Olly Murs ...

I find his confidence and unique stage presence hard to resist.

However, I think most will agree Stacey Solomon ...

Also affectionately known as Dagenham Stace, she is X-Factor's answer to Britain's
Got Talent's Susan Boyle who also surprised the judges and the audience.

Essex dance troop Diversity ...

Didn't win Britain's Got Talent but went on to perform at the Mobo Awards.

Lee Mead ...

who won TV talent show Any Dream Will Do and went onto West End fame is from Essex
and recently married Musical Star and presenter

Denise Van Outen ... also born in Essex.

Other famous people from Essex are Sir Alf Ramsey, the only football manager to take
England to World Cup Victory back in 1966. Actress Maggie Smith who despite her Scots
brogue was born a few miles down the road to me, in Ilford. Then there's the comic genius,
actor and musician Dudley Moore, legendary highwayman Dick Turpin, prolific novellist
Ruth Rendell and revolutionary Wat Tyler to name a few.

It does my heart good to know it's possible to make your mark in this life no matter
where you come from, even Essex with it's cliched image of new town sterility and bimbos in
white stillettos.

I liked Olly & Stacey very much, I hadn't seen them before.

I've seen Diversity, like them too.

I didn't think very much of Lee.
