That's the answer to why Coronation Street is still on television after 40 years.
When it first started it was a reflection of working class life in the north of England.
Of course over the course of 40 years they run out of story lines to the point where it's almost impossible to believe some of these people still live in the same street knowing what everyone knows about them. Various characters have had all kinds of sordid affairs, everything that should remain sacred and private eventually comes out as dirty linen washed in public and there are more cat fights in one episode than an entire series of Top Cat.
Although I haven't watched it relentlessly, I generally tire of television quite easily and don't watch it for long periods, but I always come back to Corrie, it's like an old friend, an institution I find hard not to enjoy just for it's humour alone.
Here's some very funny stuff. Whoever writes these scripts earns their money.
