My date with the clever Englishman lasted twelve hours last night and at the end of it I have come to the conclusion that a perfect fit for me would be a Westernized Asian man. The date was great- he is an editor for an international publication and the conversation flowed and confidences were exchanged, mostly from my side.

We talked about books, politics, religion, everything you are not supposed to talk about to avoid blowing up a new friendship. To cut to the chase he is extremely kind but relegates and attributes all human behaviour to evolution and subscribes to Darwinian explanations to everything. In other words he has a scientific almost clinical approach to life. We agreed to disagree on many things.

What I like about him is his humour and compassion for the suffering and injustice that is part of our world and which he himself has experienced - only he is neither jaded nor cynical. He has no expectations whatsoever- "life owes you nothing" yet is happy to be just able to enjoy what the day has to offer while he is still healthy and breathing.

Looks like the dynamic between us will be one of dear friends but nothing else.

He was previously married, has grown children and does not subscribe to any "organized or institutionlized religions or practices". So it looks like I have made a new friend but that is all it will ever be. I am glad I met him and look forward to seeing him again. He has lived in Singapore for a few years and we met through mutual friends. It takes all kinds to make the world but at the same time it is important to be able to tell the difference and not try to change that it is what it is- a friendship but not a romantic relationship.

As for the Westernized Asian man comment, that's who I am. Part Asian, part Western. Meanwhile life goes on.
