After taking up travel writing earlier this year and being encouraged to write a blog in regards to my travels and a guide book on my area, I found myself too busy with my other business to really focus on anything else.
Now that Christmas is over and the new year approaches, it's time to really focus on that which I really enjoy. Writing, photography, travel, and of course, graphic design and my creative endeavours. I've been procrastinating on the blog, mainly because I hate wordpress and the constant hacking of it.
However, there hasn't been another platform that I've found, that is as good as wordpress for blogging and I really don't want to code my own. Why re-invent the wheel? That being said, a friend helped me with my worddpress sites and how to protect them against hackers. Now that that's done, I feel comfortable and confident enough to move ahead with setting at least one blog site up.
One will focus on general travels and my excursions with 'blue Barry' (my bike) and hikes and walks. The other site will focus on this area and be a tie-in with the guide book. Getting my act together, I made an appointment for my first interview with a local bakery owner for tomorrow. Today, I have to do some more research on what's already been written about him, and make up some questions so I have some different content than what's already out there.
I have the cover for the book done with a working title and need to add the pages for content and an excerpt of one of my forays. Having a mockup to show them when I interview these local owners gives them a solid idea of the book and what it will contain.
Yesterday, as I was looking for something online, I came across the word 'shlep'. That's how it was spelled when I saw it, but I know the accurate term is spelled 'schlep'. I haven't heard that word since I was a kid! I thought, what a great name for a blog title on travels. Researching it, of course I knew that the word itself would be taken (both spellings) but there were several others that wouldn't be.
So off I head to godaddy and research different names in regards to schlep or shlep. Sure enough, some of them are up for re-sale for $3,000 or $10,000 - yeah, good luck with that. I was lucky enough to find a name that appealed to me and was short and easy. And not a premium price.
I'm thrilled at my success in finding a name I wanted, so today will be spent getting my blogs up and running (along with the research of my interview tomorrow). I did find a theme I wanted yesterday, so that part of the research for the blog is done and is one of the most time-consuming parts, in my opinion.
The massive snowfall we had yesterday has mostly been washed away with the ensuing rain, thank goodness. This dreary weather is a great opportunity to do those things that one puts off when the sun is shining. So, I'm off to be the wizard of blogs.
