since you covered it with a polarized lens.

Not long after camera equipment was installed at toll booths, drivers wanting to escape the penalty for not paying tolls have installed plastic license covers made from a special material that blocks the view of your license plate when photographed or viewed from an angle.

Not long after the Department of Motorized Vehicles made it illegal to do so.

A coworker was driving her husband's (badass) truck one day and I inquired if she was ok with the obscured license plate. She responded that she told her husband to remove the filter. She didn't want to get pulled over and ticketed with a $250 fine for illegally covering the tag.

Most of the camera equipment is installed at least 20 feet up with a downward angle as much as 45 degrees. I've seen my niece and nephew get traffic violations mailed with photos of their vehicles and their plates are clearly visible. They have been known to run red lights and received tickets for it.

I'm on the road around 600 miles a week and it's really amazing to see so many cars with some illegal means to cover their license plates. Typically it's the shiny yellowed (or smokey) slightly curved plastic that reflects light or creates a haze making it impossible to see the tag number unless you are right on it.

Most of the tolls around here are automatic using a prepaid transponder. For the visitors or lazy, the state has a mail-by-plate system where a statement gets mailed to the address on the vehicle registration, but every toll has an administrative charge. In the case of the lazy person not wanting to buy a transponder and prepaying, you get the hassle of paying more and writing checks each month.

It wouldn't surprise me if the system has a recognition of the vehicle without the plate number so it could tell how many times a red (badass) truck came through the toll... and one day, it will actually read the plate number through the lens and match the two. At that point it could collectively put some 200 tolls together and mail out a super violation.

I've known of people who had their plates stolen and only made up a cardboard sign forgetting to file a police report and replacing the stolen tag. All they would need is a bill for their tag on someone else's car to ringing up tolls to convince them to do so.

They don't want to be bothered paying to cancel a plate and buying another tag but it would be much more trouble when your stolen plate was spotted on a car robbing a convenience store where the cashier was murdered. Think about that.

Yep I've gotten a running a red light ticket in the mail. I couldn't fight it either because it sent me a link to me running the red light, like catching me with my hand in the cookie jar so I paid the $258 fricking bill.

I have a transponder for tolls.
