As today is National Chocolate Cake Day, how many kinds of chocolate cake are you going to eat today? Me? If I had any, I'd eat it for breakfast, although I know I'd need a nap if I did. Still, for one day I could probably suffer in order to celebrate this stellar occasion.

Chocolate cake apparently has only been with us for 150 years - the same age as Canada (we're celebrating our 150th anniversary this year) - when it was discovered that grinding cocoa beans between two stones would produce cocoa powder, which became chocolate.

Over the years, chocolate cake recipes have expanded from the traditional chocolate cake to pretty much anything you can imagine. My favourite? Hmmm - probably a layer cake with hazelnut filling and mocha frosting. My teeth hurt just at the thought of all that sweetness, but I'd be willing to suffer for this special day.

I rarely buy cake as I find the lack of real flavour disappointing. I've had cakes that look absolutely delicious, but when you take a bite, they're bland and tasteless. I always figure if you're going to eat something unhealthy, then it darn well better taste really good. As most store-bought cakes don't seem to have much flavour, I usually just don't bother purchasing any.

However, on this special occasion, I may just make a chocolate cake to celebrate this auspicious day. I'd have to see what kind of chocolate cake appeals to me and if I really want to be eating it for days. I know lots of people like cupcakes that they can freeze or easily give away, but cupcakes don't appeal to me in the least.

Maybe I'll just be satisfied to walk by the cake counter at the store and keep on going. I just remembered there's a cake recipe you make in a mug. Now there's something I could do, without having a huge cake to consume. Problem solved.

What kind of chocolate cake are you going to eat to celebrate National Chocolate Cake Day? Do you have a favourite? Are you going to eat chocolate cake all day or just one piece will do it?

Me? I could eat it all day, but I know I won't. I may make the mug chocolate cake and have it with leftover pizza for dinner. Or maybe breakfast.

I like chocolate just fine but I prefer vanillas. I took two bites of my son's chocolate cake dessert last night at Carraba's. I can't celebrate today because I'm watching my fat shrink away.

However I will share my first chocolate cake baking experience. I made one as a young woman just out on my own, for my folks. Folks came over for dinner and when I served my homemade from scratch cake. Right in front of them it split in the middle and separatee with the icing melting off a little.

I had just moved back to FL from CA and my Dad said I brought the earthquake with me in my Earthquake Cake. I was not put in charge of desserts again either. It has been a family funny for a long time.

Haha Fay! My Mom told us kids when she was first married and tried making her first chocolate cake, it was so bad that she went out and buried it in the garden before my Dad got home.
