How much more carelessness will the US allow Trump to get away with?

The Washington Post is reporting that President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information about Islamic State militants to Russian officials during a meeting at the White House last week.

The newspaper cites current and former U.S. officials who say Trump jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on IS in his conversations with the Russian foreign minister and the Russian ambassador to the U.S. They say Trump offered details about an IS terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft.

The newspaper says the information was very sensitive and had been provided by a U.S. partner.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster says no intelligence sources or methods were discussed and no military operations were disclosed that were not already known publicly.

The CIA is declining to comment.

From what I hear there's deep, deep alarm over this revelation. CNN says Trump shared sensitive information he received from a secret source that he was not authorised to share. They say it's a slap in the face of Intel. I hear some nations are afraid to share information with the US while Trump is president. Apparently Trump was bragging to Lavrov, loose lips sinks ships. He didn't even bring up the issue of Russian hacking or interference during the US election with Lavrov. Putin must be laughing out loud as he is much smarter than Trump and he will take advantage of his naivety, it's just a matter of time. This disclosure is very serious and anyone else would've been fired for it. Keep Trump's finger off the nuclear button for god sake.

Geez and the hypocrites claimed Hillary's classified emails were a MAJOR catastrophe.

P.S. Ignore the kudos, a dysfunctional sockpuppet is bored with his life.

I can't believe what you just said. ^^ Putin is an evil murderer, perhaps you missed the bombing of innocent civilians in Syria, or the continued conflict in Ukraine. And don't forget, under devious Putin sportsmen and women were banned from the olympics because they were caught taking drugs, which they deny of course. Nothing takes place in Russia without Putin's authoritarian command.

They say Trump offered details about an IS terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft.

Might this be in line with some existing treaty for cooperation against terrorism? It would help if the reporter or the president would mention that.

It's somehow connected to the ban of laptops on aircrafts from what I can gather here.

The partner had not given the United States permission to share the material with Russia, and officials said Trump’s decision to do so endangers cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State. After Trump’s meeting, senior White House officials took steps to contain the damage, placing calls to the CIA and the National Security Agency.

“This is code-word information,” said a U.S. official familiar with the matter, using terminology that refers to one of the highest classification levels used by American spy agencies. Trump “revealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.”

But officials expressed concern about Trump’s handling of sensitive information as well as his grasp of the potential consequences. Exposure of an intelligence stream that has provided critical insight into the Islamic State, they said, could hinder the United States’ and its allies’ ability to detect future threats.

“It is all kind of shocking,” said a former senior U.S. official who is close to current administration officials. “Trump seems to be very reckless and doesn’t grasp the gravity of the things he’s dealing with, especially when it comes to intelligence and national security. And it’s all clouded because of this problem he has with Russia.”

In his meeting with Lavrov, Trump seemed to be boasting about his inside knowledge of the looming threat. “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day,” the president said, according to an official with knowledge of the exchange.

Trump went on to discuss aspects of the threat that the United States learned only through the espionage capabilities of a key partner. He did not reveal the specific intelligence-gathering method, but he described how the Islamic State was pursuing elements of a specific plot and how much harm such an attack could cause under varying circumstances. Most alarmingly, officials said, Trump revealed the city in the Islamic State’s territory where the U.S. intelligence partner detected the threat.

At a more fundamental level, the information wasn’t the United States’ to provide to others. Under the rules of espionage, governments — and even individual agencies — are given significant control over whether and how the information they gather is disseminated, even after it has been shared. Violating that practice undercuts trust considered essential to sharing secrets.

The officials would not discuss details of those measures, but the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed that it is considering banning laptops and other large electronic devices from carry-on bags on flights between Europe and the United States. The United States and Britain imposed a similar ban in March affecting travelers passing through airports in 10 Muslim-majority countries.

Senior White House officials appeared to recognize quickly that Trump had overstepped and moved to contain the potential fallout. Thomas P. Bossert, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, placed calls to the directors of the CIA and the NSA, the services most directly involved in the intelligence-sharing arrangement with the partner.

One of Bossert’s subordinates also called for the problematic portion of Trump’s discussion to be stricken from internal memos and for the full transcript to be limited to a small circle of recipients, efforts to prevent sensitive details from being disseminated further or leaked. ROFLOL

U.S. officials said that the National Security Council continues to prepare multi-page briefings for Trump to guide him through conversations with foreign leaders, but that he has insisted that the guidance be distilled to a single page of bullet points — and often ignores those.

“He seems to get in the room or on the phone and just goes with it, and that has big downsides,” the second former official said. “Does he understand what’s classified and what’s not? That’s what worries me.”

Guess that's why Bob Corker, the Republican Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, is also chastisingTrump for revealing secrets to the Russians and says the White House is in a downward spiral.

Bob Corker criticizes Trump

But don't worry. Just blame media bias so that you don't have to deal with the fact that the bonehead you idolize just f***ed up again.

I wonder how many listening devices the Russians left in the oval office.

Probably as many as the Russian Reporter could stuff inside his pockets. They're about the size of a "skittle"!

I can envision how it went down.

"Mr. Trump, your tax plan sounds very good."
or "Mr. Trump your wife is very beautiful woman."
or "Mr. Trump I hear you sell very tasty steaks."

And while Trump is boring the guy who stated that,
with tons of long winded boasting, the other Russian plants the
listening devices all around the office, while it looks like he's just
picking up stuff to looks at it. .

I'd have to say, I go along with anutosh, that Trump and Putin are (like it or not) world leaders, that they are planning measures against ISIS. Both the US and the Russian Republic have been targeted by ISIS, so what's there not to understand about the two leaders getting together? The Cold War came to an end quite a few years ago, with the Russians going bankrupt trying to pace the US. I don't recall South Africa having any major part in that non-conflict.

Everything in CrocDayv's comment is what I've said before, with the exception of the SA point, (of which, I agree with) and so I back up his comment!

If we want to eradicate ISIS, who, IMO, will migrate to Russia too, if they haven't already done so; the U.S. and Russia, along with other countries we're not exactly friends with, need to work together, to at least greatly minimize the ISIS threat, if not erase them from the surface of the planet!

That is so funny Angel, not even our dumb leader would come up with that line.

If the WaPo Report was false, then why did Trump's Home Land Security and Counterterrorism Assistant immediately make calls to the CIA and the NSA when it came out????

Correct. But those who love Trump are living in a state of unconsciousness and they just can see reason and facts as realty. Zimbabwe supporters of Robert Mugabe are exactly the same.

Hey I am allowed an opinion on world affairs just like you are. Why don't you look at my response to your smart alec comment on my blog outlining the points on misogynists. Or are you the type that just hits and runs?

Regarding the US needing Russia to help destroy ISIS, who the US created anyway, it's not necessary because America is able with all its big bombs and artillery to do that job effectivity without killing innocent victims like Putin is doing right now. Besides the US has the rest of the allies to help, why is Russia so important?

Yea that makes sense like all your comments that go on and on and on with rubbish. This dumb statement contradicts itself.

The part I find most amusing is this "is what I've said before", practically every one of your dumb comments includes those words

in my opinion......

it's not so much what he did.......

but how he did it....

why HE had to be the one to break a promise NOT to share information ..

information that he kept from OUR ALLIES......

in the oval office smacks of stupidity....

now Russia is able to "BURN"

a very valuable and credible source..... based on trump's need to boast and posture....

ort else... he just publically paid back a debt he owed to putin.... by passing this info on....

a week ago.... the news was awash with a laptop ban for planes originating in Europe...

some balked about why.... but this guy knew that there must be a valid reason....

passing on information to combat terrorism and protect lives.... is a good thing...

BURNING A SOURCE ...is never in OUR best interest....

trump screwed up.....AGAIN..... at least he is not lying about it.... but only trying to spin it....

THAT..is an improvement....

but..loose lips sink ships.....and trump...has to be replaced...

what he did... was far worse than what comey did..... and he fired comey....

Trump and his tweets are a journalist's dream come true.

For a little while. But these things don't stop. Pretty soon there are too many to sift or "fact"-check, and you're reading SOS anyway, and the chore becomes a sentence. I once worked for a newspaper that had a readers' anonymous call-in line; like letters-to-ed from the illiterate plus a real risk of libel.
