On my last night on the trail in the Gila Wilderness, the leader of our group held a circle ceremony. There was an area close to our campsite where evidence of past ceremonies of one kind or another was apparent.

So, Sam drew a circle in the dirt, and after dinner called us over to the circle. He invited us to find a seat on the circle in whatever place felt right. I sat on the north.
We would do a quest for three things. The first was our birth name. When you can quiet your mind and allow that inner voice to speak, it comes not from the imagination, but from eternity within -- and it speaks a truth of which you previously may not have been aware. So for me the name Cornflower. I liked it; it vibrated with me; it seemed to fit, although I wasn't really certain why. Months later I bought a book on Aztec astrology and found my birth sign to be the cornflower.
The second quest was for our life song. I sat there with eyes closed thinking...thinking about the song of the meadowlark I had heard earlier that day. Interestingly, I have encountered a soul sister on Matchdoctor -- a woman born on my 6th birthday -- which happened, as my birthdate, to be a Saturday the 14th and both of us were born with Cancer rising. Her username is Meadowlark. When we started corresponding, I was reminded of the circle ceremony and the quests. She also is very much into Native American spirituality. The song of the meadowlark left me though to be replaced with The Song of the Deep River Flowing. I liked the song. It was the only quest for which I could provide any meaning that night. For me the river is my deep spirituality, my connection to God.
Revelations 22:1-2:
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. The third and final quest was for our life name. In my mind was the vision of the Unity church -- which here in Houston is a gold pyramid. My life name: Unity.
A few weeks later, I was again in NM, sightseeing the weekend before a business meeting to negotiate taxes with the Navajos. In Madrid, I stopped at a little shop selling "spirit keepers." They were gourds with a piece of rabbit fur around the neck and feathers along the top and a face and symbols painted on them. Each had a tag telling the identity of the "spirit keeper". I was drawn to a large one in the corner. It was the spirit keeper of Duality. The tag explained that while duality often seems the opposite of unity, that duality is in fact two sides of the same coin. "This spirit keeper sits on the North."
