My daughter called me a few days ago concerned that I would soon be 55 years old and would undoubtedly die within moments. She is 18 and I can easily recall thinking "30" was an old age back then. She asked me to consider changing professions because she worries so much about me falling or hurting myself at my job. Fortunately, I do too, which helps me avoid dangerous situations more than I did in my "invincible days" of youth.
At least I am not involved with dangerous sports. Brenda and I met my daughter and her boyfriend at the bowling alley last night where we bowled three games. Provocation for the event was the bowling ball I had bought at a yard sale for $4. I found one which fit my hand perfectly and get this!!!!..... It also had a bag with a pair of nice bowling shoes which also fit me perfectly. Those shoes were slippery though. I was on my first approach down the alley. I remembered all the lessons as I stopped at the markers and concentrated on the head pin. I raised the ball and pushed it slightly forward as I took my first step. Remembering all the instructions of my past I made a near perfect advance but as I released the ball, my body slid forward along with it until I came to rest about 4 feet past the foul line with a twisted ankle. I was able to finish the three games without too much pain but when I woke up this morning, I could not walk. Any weight at all on that foot caused excruciating pain. I went back to sleep and stayed in bed until nearly 4 pm. It must have done me some good because when I woke up I could stand on my right foot, as long as I was very careful of its placement.
I suppose I should look for a new profession, all new hobbies, watch sports only on television and try to retire from life altogether on my birthday next week. But I know me well enough to know that won't happen. I have been considering ice skating at the Jones Center, but snow skiing is far too expensive. I am hoping to go bowling again soon.
