Tonight was the first my 5-year-old has seen it. I'd realized suddenly that she never had, and immediately put it at the top of my Netflix queue. She, the Best Toddler Ever, their mom and me, with pizza, popcorn, soda and Dunkin Donuts (delicious and nutritious). She's the same age I was when it first came out.

She said as she went to bed [scare quotes hers], "Daddy... I didn't "love" it like you said."

Ah, well. She's not got the science fiction background I did. I don't think she even understands the concept of alien civilizations. (That'll be tomorrow's homeschooling lesson.) And I have no doubt she'll warm to it as she watches it several dozen times over the next two weeks.

Got in one great line, though. When the 5-year-old asked why Leia didn't like Han, I told her (referencing the ex finding me obnoxious the first time we met), "Sometimes people think they don't like someone at first then decide they want to marry them for a few years until the find out they're gay."

Ex: "We would love to claim Leia!"

Me: "You can have her when I'm done. (pause) Kinda like with you. SNAP!"

(Note: This was well within bounds for us. A hearty laugh was had by both. Didn't hurt that I delivered "SNAP!" in an incredibly uncool-thinking-it's-cool voice.)

haha, my little bro is 6. He has recently saw the movies as well... (and played the lego star wars version of them =P ) He now idolizes dark vader and wishes he could force choke me from time to time... I think he's quite destined for the dark side.

Whew...Star Wars, I remember seeing it in the theater with some friends, I was 14 I think...and drugged up on THC...or at least that's what I was told it was...we used to just call it T or Tea, I'm not sure which now, but didn't matter. The movie was life altering.

I remember the first time my son saw the first 3 episodes (or is it the last 3? I get all confused, dyslexia and all that).

When I was in prison I'd ordered him not to see it until I got out, and a week after my release he--then 9 years old--my cousin Hannah--11 years old--and I sat down for a video marathon, complete with pizza, pop, and candy.

It was amazing.

He's still a fan, and we have all the episodes (as well as heated debates about which episode should be called the "first" one).

And I remember going to the theater in the 1970s to see the first Star Wars (I too was high, Gary) and how wonderful it was. It's a little hokey today compared to it's slick new brothers, but we still like it.

Wonderful story Monsterboy... You have such an infectious humor. I pity your children, though... Not !!!

Yep, it was always Hans Solo for me...

Slightly different perspective here, since my oldest son's a bit older than Monsterboy (and he has YET to produce any grandchildren for me, slacker that he is)...but we both have Star Wars IV, V and VI pretty much memorized. Family rituals include big bowls of popcorn, watching the DVD, reciting passages in unison. Guess it's our version of evening prayers... May the Force be with us all!

Dude that's so awesome you got to be there for your Daughter's first Star Wars exposure...SW was the first movie going experience of my youth...First film I remember seeing in an ACTUAL theater...The Kind with the curtainst that start shut...then telescope open to reveal a HUGE SCREEN! When Episode III came out I saw it four times over the course of opening weekend....The first time, I got really weepy...Yeah...I cried...I'll admit it....

I was pretty happy though, 'cuz I turned my ex's kid's onto Star Wars...One day I'll have a rug rat or two of my own that I can turn on to the saga of Star Wars....

And as far as your ex goes...they call her fire now...cuz BURN!!!!!

I remember about two years ago first exposing my sister to Star Wars. She really didn't get it at first but because she likes to follow everything I do she said she loved it right away. Now she knows all about EU as well as canon and we can sit down and talk about the Yuuzhan Vong and how Chewie died on Sernpidal when a moon came crashing down on his head. It's really wonderful.

*gasp*
She didn't like Star Wars??
Eh, that's ok, I wasn't fond of it at first either. I just liked R2. And her quote...I can see now why you adore her. That was just precious.
But you have to make her watch the others too...I was hooked once I layed eyes on the ewoks. I begged my mom for months to buy me one.
