If you've ever lived in or visited New Orleans, you've probably heard of Tipitina' s. This Uptown musical establishment has been around a long time. It has hosted many musical legends and has taken a lead role in helping musicians in our area.
The Mardi Gras before this last one, the first after the storm, was weird. So many of the local high school students weren't back in the city or the schools had lost uniforms and instruments. This has always been a major part of our culture. It just wasn't the same. This year was better. The bands are back stronger, still not the same though.
The Tipitina's Foundation was instrumental in helping out many of these schools. I felt it was worth a blog. It is a wonderful thing. Another wonderful thing that they are doing in the city right now is rebuilding the lower 9th ward home of legendary Fats Domino. This is so great. We love fats, as well as many music lovers around the world. It was truly sad to see the video clips last year of Fats Domino returning to his destroyed home. Decades of gold records and memorabilia, soaking wet and full of mold, were pulled from the devastation. It really hurt to see the tears in Fats' eyes. This is just one example of what so many of our musicians endured.
The Tipitina's Foundation Mission
The Tipitina's Foundation a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has worked diligently to uplift the music community of New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, the Foundation responded by rebuilding New Orleans' music culture. Initially, the Foundation addressed the immediate needs of our exiled musicians and allowed them to carry on with their lives. Now the foundation is using the legendary music club, Tipitina's Uptown, as the center of its relief efforts by hosting a newly-opened Music Co-op Office that allows musicians to conduct their business activities during the daytime, free legal and accounting seminars, free music lessons for music students, regular Master Seminars, and help with housing information. An important aspect of the rebuilding process has involved finding replacement instruments for both professionals and music students alike. So far the foundation has given away over $500,000 of new instruments. Through these efforts, the Tipitina's Foundation is saving the musical traditions of New Orleans.
