I should give credit where credit is due because that subject line is no quote from me. I got it from a blog, or maybe it's a forum, related to survivors of incest as it was posted on June 27th of 2006: http://www.bearingthroughit.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1151073843 by a man who really sounds like he's trying to do the right thing by his family!
Isn't it beautiful? Well, a little beautiful .. I'd love to be able to take credit for such a good line, Id love to be able to say that I wrote something truly unique, but, if I have then I certainly didn't have the ego to horde it away in my brain and think how I should jump up and give myself accolades over it later.
Maybe I should have because, after all, isn't that what good art is truly about? Being able to claim things as your own, being able to brag about a degree you earned or a job you had? Isn't it more important to look at a canvas of a person who knows the theories of art than one from a person who cannot live without painting?
I have a friend who went to art school, in fact, and he went through a phase (before I met him thank God) of great pretentiousness and of believing that it made him a better artist than other artists who did not go to art school . He has since calmed down a great deal, in that respect, and realized that it means nothing except he had an opportunity not all are given or can afford to purchase for themselves.
It is funny because we both came from these different backgrounds, him of the art school and pretentiousness and me of the haters of people who are of the art school for their pretentiousness, and now we are both truly enamored of each other's work and minds. We are, in fact, a great deal alike, except that I am more sane.
That is not a brag! He has to take medication for his mental health issues and I have to not because I don't really have any lol
I think, when all is said and done, that art school, writing classes, etc. are great enhancements to a talent that exists but they aren't necessary. If you don't have them, but the talent and the passion are truly there, you will find other enhancements to replace them.
Just as you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, you should never judge an artist by their degree, pedigree, social status, or current place of employment. You shouldn't judge an artist by anything but their art.. and the usual things one judges mortals by: integrity, honesty, humanity
