We have shopping carts in the states, but they are free to use. There is only one store a few towns over from where I live that charges 25 cents, you must put your quarter into the machine to get a cart. The last time we went I didn't have a quarter, neither did my bf, so we ended up carrying the stuff around the store in a plastic shopping bag we had brought. A bit awkward. I think those types of grocers should have change machines inside their stores.

The only one I've come across here in Wisconsin that requires a coin is ALDI's-and ironically enough, that's a company based in Europe(Germany).

I think this is all about logistics. In Britain you will find shopping trolleys scattered around the country as if its been raining trolleys. They apparently prefer trying to swim but I have yet to see one doing it successfully. In the States no one goes anywhere without being accompanied by their car or truck. Try getting a trolley into a car. The best device I have encountered for preventing escaping trolley syndrome is giving them a mast (a little like a dodgem electricity mast) which prevents them being taken out of the store.

We have them in California at some Dollar Tree stores, among others. I usually don't hook it back up and lose a quarter, so that other people can use the carts. Or trolleys. I like the word trolley better.

The thing that REALLY annoys me with SuperMarkets is that you have to pay, not only to get in (Trolley Hostage Fees), but to get out too.
You may find, Misschoos, that not bothering with a trolley may be your answer, it's called Shoplifting :0)

They have started to put systems like that in. There is a barrier around the perimeter and the wheels lock if you reach the red line. The sensor wire buried in parking lot & sidewalk has become standard for one chain of grocer in my area. Maybe the contractors installing the system should put more thought into this system. One store has the wires too close to the exit doors and you probably have a 50/50 change of getting a lockup! The locking mechanism affects only one wheel... so the pissed off patrons will drag the cart (trolley) to their car, wearing a flat spot in the tire (that's tyre to you misschoos) Eventually, the store has a bunch of lame wheeled carts that go... cachunk, cachunk, cachunk, cachunk when you push the cart around shopping!

I thought it was great to put a kudo into a trolley that’s going to help to hold me up to walk around the store. Brilliant! ... and if you find you've passed the point of hanging on, you can always pay an extra pound, get in the cart and have some kid push you around! Perhaps the markets will catch on and add some "cart boys" to their staff, creating more employment opportunities!
Anoher positive effect on society from the innebriated!
ps.... you truly are a nut job!

Trolleys (or carts as we call em) are still free here in Missouri
Unless you want to ride in one and then they call em Trolleycars, but we don't have any of those in MO.
