These scammers are really good at their scams. They put up pretty pictures, nice profiles, get your attention, gain your trust, then need your "help". They say they are from your local area..... but are currently taking care of some reasonably believable business in Nigeria, Ghana, West Africa, etc. They claim to need cash money... or help to cash their checks and money orders, or want you to open a bank account for them... BEWARE!

The people in the pictures are NOT the people you are talking to. It is just part of the show they put on, to get money out of us. This is NOT the typical "Get Rich Quick" scam. These scammers prey upon your trust, love, and decency.

There is an excellent support and information group on yahoo. The group is the Romancescams Group. Lots of pictures that the scammers use are posted there, and lots of information. Lots of caring people, that will help.

The URL is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/romancescams/

The FBI gets about 10,000 reports of these scams every month. It could happen to you.

I think they would be better off pretending to be from American or European companies because who the hell wants to wire money to some skinny in Africa?

Oh my God! I just sent them my financial records and PIN numbers......but it'll be ok right?

I just don't understand how anyone can get scammed by these things but I know it does happen, some of them pretty smart people too. Some local government official recently got stung, thought he could make some money for his town.

I just got a letter on BBPeople (another dating service I'm on) from a GORGEOUS guy who said he was from Nigeria but he's white and said he is 'working in New York". I wonder if this guy is a scam? My first instinct was that he is. He hasn't asked for $ or for me to open an acct. for him - no mention of $ but it was the first e-mail. He really looks too much like a movie star to be on a dating site. (No offense guys but he's just too pretty). He's prettier than me.

One just tried to hit on me just now. He calls himself Jeffery man. He is supposed to be 6'2 and 105 pounds A bit skinney don't you agree dumb as says he is from Kansas but gives a Canadian yahoo address. Wish there was something we could do to discourage these little jerks
I was thinking of saying I was dying and that my family didn't want anything to do with me, so I need someone to leave all my 16 million dollars too. Really play it to the hilt

Yep that's pretty much what the one guy I keep mentioning, who sent me a check for $4,000, was up to.

Except I didn't believe him, I didn't offer to help except to make suggestions as to ways his "friend in Canada" could help him or he could help himself, and I didn't give him my address so it freaked me out that he mailed me the check!

Good blog!

I know all about these dam scammers. One almost had me fooled. I wasn't spending much time on md at the time and didn't know about the dang scams and this guy posted this gorgeous picture (which was a models) although I didn't know it at the time..I fell for his crap, hook , line and sinker. Well, had someone send me 3400.00 worth of fraud money orders and I had them in my little hand and decided to check them out, and of course they were fraud..I game him hell and then blocked him on my messenger. By then he cancelled his account, because he said he had met his true love.. Yea right...Dam scammers, I am mad as hell at them..

Another very new dating site, Right Lover.com has mostly these types of scammers. Like Romantic says, the guys are just too pretty. I've been getting emails from this one guy that says he lives in Beverly Hills, CA -- but lives over in Africa right now. He is absolutely gorgeous, sexy -- his first email to me: U R exactly what I am looking for I really want to talk to you -- your picture made the earth move -- I think I'm in love with you....
OK red flags, the guy is a f....n liar and I'm gonna put the warning out

Thank you. It always helps too if you click the "Report Spam" button while reading an email from someone you think is a spammer. That helps us shut them down before they throw their bait to to more of our members.

Please help spread the word about these scams. Anyone that knows about them, and how devastating they can be, will never fall prey to them.

Since there has been no real nationwide media coverage to speak of, word of mouth is the only way people will be made aware of these scams.

Thanks!

Oh yes!!! It's happened to me, too...but...who in the hell do they think we are??? Dumb blondes??? lol, sorry if I offended anyone...but seriously...I could see thru them right off the bat...like you said...too pretty to be real! These guys said they are in love w/ me on the first email! HA! One played it cool...he & I were IMing for about a week...they don't take long, he said he's from KY, but is currently in Africa w/ his daughter...he was trying to get this job, but the people in Africa wanted him to pay them for his business!!! HA!! Anyway, he said that he gave them the money because it was a "sweet job" w/ lots of money potential and he didn't want to lose the account...well...then he & his daughter were stuck w/ no money to pay the hotel bill and wanted me to help him out! I politely told him to go jump off a cliff...in those exact words.

What do they think we Americans are??? Stupid???

Well, at the end of my profile, I let them all know that if that's their intentions...just pass me by!

Jerks!

I get these types of emails daily.Sadly there ARE people who fall for them! What may seem ridiculous to most of us,some people are just very lonely and vulnerable. But that doesn't make them a bad person.Just someone who needs to guard their kind heart a little more defensively. As long as we have the internet and telephones, these scammers will always be around!

I guess the odds are that if they keep sending these messages, eventually someone will be stupid enough to fall for it. As the rednecks would say, "here's your sign".

There's another one --calls him self "Mark Dolek"--uses "jenny" as email addy--gorgeous pic--and is a scammer from Nigeria. Again, reported and deleted. But not before telling him I loved him and wanted him to faher my 7 children --plus he needed to work at lest three jobs as I am used to spending money!! Told him I go through 10,000 a month. That got him off my tail.

Hi guys and gals
Proposal to each one of you to do the same…

i already start-up to give to all scammers "that i know so far" something to do...
hence all of them are asking for money usually through WU...
i am sending to them once per month or when i feel like .. an email with all the info which they need (MTCN #)...to pick-up some money (if any)...
also in to the email I do make clear to them that the asking question which they have to answer to “it is what is your name” and therefore the password to pick up the money it is one of their names.. which none of them will get it from me…

therefore I am using a pool of scammers, and make them to go and move their asses at WU location such to find out on who’s name "if any" an MTCN # and money are to be issued...
obviously if that will happen to many times and they are going to the WU to receive some money…… all of them will be noticed by the WU agency… hence all of them will use and have the same MTCN at the same date…
and according to above if that will happen in mass and all of us will send the scammer’s which we know to pick-up phonies MTCN’s (that at the same time/day)…the WU probably will have some bottle necks interruptions which will determine them to take action and inform the authorities about the people which came to pick up some phonies MTCN’s.

please don’t worry much about pictures or profiles, hence on the net everything can be copied and modified…probably the scammers did use already our profile and information if they did found it pretty interesting or attractive.

i get email everyday telling me i have won the uk,australia, netherlands.yahoo, msn lotteries of some hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some times i get emails telling me to be a company representative in a particular country to assist in collecting money for that company and from there i will be paid a percentage. Then there are the emails i receive that want me to assist in transfering large amounts of money. In all of this i figured what is really needed is money and personal data. They are all scams even though they have phone numbers attached. So just beware!

Please let me make it clear. Internet scam is internet scam - It has absolutely nothing to do with the provider of the internet service.

I am a Nigerian International Telecom Salesman based in Montreal Canada and I have met with Maher Qubain, the CEO of Starcomms Nigeria. He is neither a scammer nor a supporter of same. He is just a service provider ----> whatever his service is used for is not his fault see? So please, stop putting his name on the web as a supoorter of the perpetrators!!!

Thank you!

yeah my boyfriend got a very believeable email from a guy over in ghana
saying that he wanted him to act as a next of kin to a deceased guy that
has no family and has 9 million dollars that bears the same last name as my boyfriend. it was very very believeable because he sounded so professional and
it just seem like hey that could work,
there horrible people over there
that just sit around and find ways to f*** over hard working AMERICANS
i think its awful and i hope that no one falls for it and gets screwed over.
they will say anything like saying o u can talk to my director that would be
directly depositing the money into your account THEY ARE ALL IN ON IT!
it is too good to be true!

Right now I have four women trying to get me to wire them money via Western Union. Three from Ghana Africa and one from the Ukraine. I met these women online at Match.com and AdultFriendFinder.com. What typically happens is that they email me or instant message me and we start a friendship. As the days go by they start getting more and more serious. Finally the seriousness turns out to talk of love and marriage. They then talk about coming over to the USA. However, they don't posses the travel documents or plane ticket to come over here. This is where they ask for me to pay for it. They give me all the information needed to wire them money in an email. I got one wanting as much as $7000.

I have had practically nothing but that happen to me. At first, I felt sorry for the ladies begging me for help, even to the point of blogging a report to get some help to one of them, located at Supposed help aid notice for one of the "scammers"I even explained to her that I myself am very low income and can not help her financially.
