One of my very best friends in the UK has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a radical mastectomy and some complications and it's been a slow recovery. She's a wonderful caring person, a hospice nurse who's spent her life helping others and now she needs some support.

I want to try and cheer her up a bit by sending her a box of things that are uniquely American and/or Californian. I have a few ideas I've been kicking around, sand from Malibu, US coins and bills, Minnie Mouse ears from Disneyland, a picture of me under the Hollywood sign...but I need a lot more and I'm stumped.

She has a great sense of humor (hence the mouse ears) so any suggestions at all would be welcome.

I should say I'm not wealthy, thrifty ideas (under $25) are a plus

Thanks!

Kudos for kindness! How about a Burger King Crown? And instead of Micky Mouse Ears (they ran like $ 36. when we were there), you can go to the local craft store, like Michaels and buy the plastic sun catchers for her to paint. I have bought Tinker Bell, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Flowers, etc, for my kids to paint on rainy days. A nice cardboard box from there with the 50% one item coupon that runs in the paper, shouldn't cost more than $ 3.00, and you can decorate it.
Princess crowns, are in every Walmarts, and since easter just went by, how about making her a bonnet? Complete with trim? Happiness and Joy!

What reaches out most and transcends the trivial, is simply to send her a bunch of flowers through 'interflora' or similar.

That reaching out from over the pond to have put time in to do and to attach a short but personal message, is probably the best emotional, supportive shoulder from a friend anybody could wish for..

More great ideas, thanks everyone!

I think I'm headed to the beach for seashells and sand and Hollywood Blvd for that star and maps, and a trip to Michaels in between - I love that princess hat idea!

A couple more great ideas. For sure I'm hitting the tourist shops in Hollywood, and I really live the dvd idea, I was thinking about making some sort of video to send her, I think I'll add that as well.

Thank you everyone! I knew you guys would come through for me
