Apparently in another blog, the blogger recounts tales of cruelty to animals, squirrels and porcupines and maybe others. I glanced at it, noticed the comments and left; I pretty much discounted the blog entirely.
But it's gotten responses. Some of us post to shock, some to inform, and others, like me, blog to poke fun at our frailties. I certainly haven't given the impression I know what the fk I'm talking about, just a dumbass making a boob out of himself. Most of you know that...some don't but...well, I am.
But the cruelty of the blog hit home here. It's because no one took offense at the blog's content. We know of the blogger's personal problems and it isn't really surprising. So I decided to take it upon myself to show the other side, how some people care for and nurture those animals that have met with tragedy or cruelty by man.
This is a story about Henry.
Henry is about 10 years old. He's a Fox Squirrel, an old boy from the trees of Oakland County, MI. Henry came here to Sci's rehabilitation center about 4 months ago. It was a cold day in January and Henry was finding it more difficult to survive as the years had taken their toll. Henry found himself hungry and disoriented after being injured somehow; the hows and whys aren't known but Henry's time had come.
He found himself in the parking lot of Sci's vet, cold, hungry and near death. One of the vet techs spied Henry and brought him inside the office. As this is Sci's vet, they knew who to call.
Henry was about 1 day from death; death had come knocking on ol' Henrys door. He was anemic from fleas, he had a closed head injury, an injured eye, he was emaciated and dehydrated.
Yes, Henry is just a squirrel, we see them every day. I'm sure a lot of us enjoy watching squirrels in our backyard, sometimes we even feed them. They come in all colors and sizes. A squirrel is a squirrel. To some, as that particular blog points out, it's a target for cruelty. To others, something else.
Henry was seen at the vet's, he was rehydrated, given some anti-biotics, given a shot of vitamins, and treated for the infestation of fleas.
Sci and the vet agreed that Henry was worth saving but in need of some serious TLC. Henry's first two days had Sci worried; he was in pretty bad shape and she was worried that he'd die during the night. To her surprise, Henry started to improve and responded to what is called emaciation protocol. He was a fighter. As a wild squirrel, they tend to shy away from humans, most likely in response to treatment as outlined in that blog I mentioned earlier...years of instinct teach animals of humans' predatory nature. I'm thinking Henry knew that this particular human contact was different. He was being cared for, fed and housed in a warm environment.
About 10 days later, Henry suffered a setback. The injured eye could have been caused by a BB gun, a strike by a car...tons of stuff. Henry had arrived with his eye swollen and scabbed over. He was treated in those 10 days, but in the process of grooming, he might have scratched it. His closed head injury made things difficult for Henry. The cornea fell off his eye taking the lense with it. Sci immediately took Henry to the vet for an assessment. Unfortunately, not much could be done and Henry lost sight in his left eye.
A period of time went by, Henry continued to improve despite everything life had given him. His worst injuries healed and today Henry lives; he's still old but he's healthy. A savvy city-dwelling squirrel that has seen his last tree. But his temperment and that savvy nature has made him an ideal educational addition to Sci's mission of teaching people about wildlife. Through Henry, people are learning that even the smallest of creatures have worth, they're not an animal to be kept as pets, but they still have a huge impact on our enviroment. All species do. Though he's just a squirrel, Henry has proven that the will to survive is strong in every living creature. No animal should be subject to the cruelty of humans.
Henry's just a squirrel, but he's content to live out his days loved and respected...

Great story! I've picked up so many sick, injured, mistreated animals, both wild and domestic I can't even give you a number! Some of them had happy stories like your squirrel, many had to be euthanized. But even for the ones who didn't make it, their ending was better than if they had been left to suffer and die scared, in pain, and with no one to let them know that they did matter and that their worth and beauty as a living breathing part of this big, beautiful world was appreciated and honored by someone.
Cruelty to animals is a sick, sick thing and should NEVER be tolerated, accepted, or joked about.
That is my opinion and I stand by it!
Also, it's wonderful to hear a man talk so sweetly of a woman! Hope to have that some day myself......in the near future would be nice! LOL

You know I do think some of us thought when we read the blog in question WTF and I did but I choose not to comment on negative things as a rule. Now your blog here got a kudo because you did it in a tasteful manner which I know you don't always do. I've been made to rethink things because of several of Sci's blogs about her work and the way she put it across was very mature so I respect that. This I have learned people tend to remember the bad, the negative and it gets much more space in one's head. Sad to me so I don't say much about the negatives in hopes of saying stuff about the positive will outweigh the bad in memory. I'm tired so this probably isn't coming out right but I tried, lol!

Kudos to you AND Henry. There is oftentimes a vast gap between what we as humans consider progress, versus preservation. Okay, I'm not a big fan of slugs or snails, but if that were the only food source of an animal higher in the food chain, then the slug/snail might have worth. I don't purposely kill anything, unless I have no choice. Common brown spider? I'll actually chase it up onto paper and let it jump off... OUTside the house. Black widow? Ummm, sorry, as pretty as they might be, they can survive the wild just fine without living in MY place - they get the Raid. Larger animals? Yeah, I'm guilty of saving bunches. I've stopped, backed up and even grabbed turtles from a raodway, before they're roadkill. Injured dogs, cats, pigeons, rabbits, a young Barred Owl, and even a four-foot gator... they're all worth my time. Some have scared me, but either I've been incredibly lucky, or they understood my empathy. The way I see it, if they weren't meant to be saved, God would not have let me see them.

I missed that blog.. People are cruel but there are those who are not.. Smile.. It is sad that the balance is death for some while others take care to save.. In light of all that is happning in the world today it is amazing that there are those who do care and it is good that I would like to say those that do are some of my favorite people.. There used to be a song I cannot remember the words that wouldn't it be amazing if only good news were printed on the front pages of the newspaper... I do not know anymore as our society gets more and more bad news we are all affected to a degree... Thanks for the story of hope and courage of something so small and old that had been cruely mistreated by humanity and yet saved by humanity also..

I never knew Squirrels live to be ten years old, and I can't understand why someone would intentionally try and hit one. Sometimes it's unavoidable and I feel sad every time I see a dead animal by or on the road. I'm glad things worked out for Henry.

Thanks for this PMF. Is nice to know that Sci has great backup, not to mention your love for her and animals. Her blog about Eleanor really touched me, and I am sure others as well. Its an awful feeling to see roadkill every day, and much worse if we are the ones causing it at high speed, or even unintentially trying to miss but not quite succeeding. Anything else is unthinkable.

Henry is one lucky squirrel... Wonderful blog.
Funny I should log on and read this blog. Yesterday, I was standing at the office window facing the busy street, when I spied a skinny little gray squirrel running circles on the asphalt jungle outside. I watched as he headed for the curb. I was amused and concerned by his jumping bean movements as he surveyed the challenge before him....that being, getting across the street in one piece.
Cars whizzed by as I silently yelled, "No, don't do it!" But, he saw his break and took it. I watched as he managed to survive the eastbound traffic just to find himself beneath the body of a red Blazer driven by a young man who obviously was breaking and trying to avoid the little beast. He came to a near stop, looking for the squirrel...the little bugger darted out from beneath this iron monster with nary a passing concern for his near demise. He found the grassy medium and a Poplar sapling, he didn't waste any time getting his little butt up that tree.
Seconds later, he was down the tree and hustling for yet a farther curb, crossing yet another, not so busy street....I watched as he finally made it the residential area across the way.....lots of trees and bushes for him to play in. Safety.
There won't be a day in my life, when I see a squirrel, that a fleeting image of you and Sci won't brush my thoughts.

I started to read that blog then saw the content and decided against it.. I was already in a pissy mood and knew I would reply to it in a not so nice manner..ever since coming to know Sci and her love for all critters, I have started watching the small critters lying in the road and stopping to see if there is anything can be done for them.. what I would do, I don't know, but to try and keep them alive as best I can.. thank you PMF for responding to that blog in a more mature manner than I would have..

I read that other blog and was just sick at the comments that were made, goes to show some people lack something up top, Kudos for saving that lil guy. I did the same with a bunny, a squirrel and god knows how many animals. Heck, when my kids found a dead frog on the road we buried the lil thing, even gave him a eulogy (sp?). I am an animal lover and I just want to kick the snot out of some people that lack that kind of compassion for animals. Again.... KUDOS to you!!!!
