HORRENDOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for WHAT??!!
Things are WORSE there since we started that war. Bush is a moron for ever getting us involved but it was about oil, corporate greed and revenge on them for saying back when his father was President that they were going to kill him! Well he's still alive!
McCain says 'it's not bad over there' - 'we're winning' - while snipers are on rooftops and bombs go off everywhere. Another idiot.
Let's just hope no one is stupid enough to vote for those Right Wing Extremist Bozos in 2008. But I'm pretty sure the mandate from November will hold.

Lancet Study has been discredited by more organizations than I can count.
I am ALL for dissent. Trust me, ALL for dissent.
But please, research sources before using them, or you run the risk of being used by someone with an agenda.
(Mortis is a Infantry combat vet from the 80s and early 90s, and would be over in the Gulf now if he was still in the service)

The numbers for the US Military killed are valid, but I can't confirm the others, and I'm far too lazy to research it.

There have been more than 16,000 people murdered in our country every year for the past five years. This figure is greatly understated as many that are murdered are never found and do not get counted.
So the math says that there were almost as many people murdered in our country since the was began - THINK ABOUT THAT! Yet there is no outrage in Washington about our own country. WHY?
While I am certainly no war monger and was not in favor of the war in Iraq I understood the decision.

If you have other figures please post them, I welcome all comments.
I posted the Wikipedia source because I felt it had the best description of what the Lancet Study looks at. I found the same information on a number of sites.
Personally I believe the real number lies somewhere in between.
No matter how you look at it, over 60,000 people confirmed have died in our "war" on terrorism.
American's get upset because 32 people where killed at a college and they should. Innocent Iraqi's are dying in scores just going shopping or going to a restaurant where bombers kill 60, 70, 80 people at a time, and no one in the US blinks. Why not? The Iraqi people didn't start a war with us, we picked it with them. Osama is still alive and kicking and hiding in Afghanistan, not Iraq.

Bush never wanted Afganistan, but he couldn't ignore real evidence that Iraq wasn't behind 9/11, no matter how hard he tried to.

The Times attempted to reach a comprehensive figure by obtaining statistics from the Baghdad morgue and the Health Ministry and checking those numbers against a sampling of local health departments for possible undercounts. The Health Ministry gathers numbers from hospitals in the capital and the outlying provinces. If a victim of violence dies at a hospital or arrives dead, medical officials issue a death certificate. Relatives claim the body directly from the hospital and arrange for a speedy burial in keeping with Muslim beliefs.
If the morgue receives a body — usually those deemed suspicious deaths — officials there issue the death certificate.
Health Ministry officials said that because death certificates are issued and counted separately, the two data sets are not overlapping.
The Baghdad morgue received 30,204 bodies from 2003 through mid-2006, while the Health Ministry said it had documented 18,933 deaths from "military clashes" and "terrorist attacks" from April 5, 2004, to June 1, 2006. Together, the toll reaches 49,137.
From the L.A. Times, hardly a right wing paper.

Thanks for adding more info Mortis, you're right about the LA Times!
I was trying to find the most current up-to-date figures. As you note the Times study only went to June of last year, and I would guess it falls in line with the current IBC count if you account for the time between 6/06 and now.
And since I forgot to say here on the blog before, thank you for your service.

It is too bad that good men and women have to die like this ...
Not defending Bush ... just want to make a couple of points
- please everyone do your research before making "moron" comments ... Bush got most of his intelligence from the Clinton administration ... and france and Great Britain (thanx Meg) - In fact, most of the "politicians" who are making anti-war comments at one time made comments to the contrary ... and ALMOST ALL OF THEM VOTED FOR IT. - There IS NO way to talk peace with these people - it has been tried for 3000 years and has never worked ... ask Russia ... and GB should know better
by and large, I am shocked at the comments of "politicians" ... you did not see this type of backstabbing during major conflicts when all-in-all, democrats were presidents ... in fact, the Rep party stood behind the dem pres
Throughout history, the US has not intentionally "started" any conflict, though we sometimes should not be involved in cultural differences, and we have attempted to "defend" the defenseless. There have been tremendous changes in Iraq ... electricity in most of the country, cell phones, schools, hospitals, and colleges ! Evidence shows that during SH's reign, at least 44k people were murdered, and some speculate that number could be as high as 800k SH was experimenting with nerve agents Some terrorists attempted to make the US vulnerable, something that has never really happened on our soil
Want to talk about the millions of african christians being killed by muslims? Again - there is no way to talk peace with this radical faction

Thank you for your comments and input. I agree with you in that there is no talking rationally with these people who seem hell-bent on killing us just for living on the same planet and having the nerve to purchase their oil. I don't agree with placing blame on everyone but George is correct, but I respect your opinion.
I did try to find some info on the number of Christians killed by Muslims but was unable to find any good sources. I don't understand why that sort of thing seems to be swept under the rug while all this is going on. Someone had sent me a list last year naming all the Muslim atrocities towards Christians and I'm unable to locate it now. If you find anything on it I would welcome your further input.
