I believe in karma. At least my definition of it, which is what comes around goes around. If you do positive things, good things will happen for you, if you do negative things, bad things will happen to you . I know it sounds silly but experience has taught me maybe, just maybe, there's some truth to it. Today I added one to my maybe list.
This morning when I opened my garage door I found a black fuzzy caterpillar wandering across my driveway, right in the path of my tires. Fuzzy caterpillars are the only bug I will pick up so I scooped the little fellow up to move him so he wouldn't get squished. It was the first one of the season I've seen so I had to play with him for a minute, letting him crawl across my hand while I petted his fuzzy little back. I set him down near the wall in the yard , far away from the driveway. I went to work and the day was relatively uneventful, which is always nice for a Friday.
On my way home from work I take 210 freeway West, which at 5pm in the afternoon averages about 40 mph on a good day. Once you get to Pasadena though, forget about that, it's bumper to bumper stop and go. I usually get in the fast lane and don't move out it, but today I never even went there. I stayed in the slow lane because there was a big old white pickup truck with white and black smoke belching out from under it in huge clouds over in the carpool lane next to the fast lane and I didn't want to be anywhere near him when he broke down, which looked like would be any minute. The freeway widens in Pasadena to 5 lanes and I saw in my mirror a newer small white pickup coming up fast but still a ways back in the newly added slow lane next to me. I was doing maybe 20 mph, he had to be going 70. As he flew by me he cut me off coming over into my lane, but I had anticipated his action and he was going so fast it didn't matter to me except to think, "what a jerk". About 2 seconds later someone from the lane to the left of us cut him off, and he swerved over hard into that lane, causing an SUV there to barely miss him; he kept traveling across the next lane and finally into the fast lane, which had come to a complete stop. He locked up his brakes and slid almost sideways, slamming into the back of a Camaro in the fast lane, causing the Camaro to hit a Honda in front of him, and I'm not sure if the Honda hit the car in front of him, I was watching the pickup. The small pickup bounces over into the carpool lane where he is almost hit by another car and the truck originally behind the Camaro narrowly avoids hitting him as well. I think I hear some more crunching of metal on metal going on behind them as traffic slams to an abrupt halt in that lane and possibly any of the three lanes to the left of me, but I keep going so I can get out of this mess, and what's in front of me? The smoking pickup, dead ahead. I thought this guy had been long gone ahead of me by using the carpool lane, and I never saw him get in front of me. Thankfully he continued to get over so I was only behind him a moment. I'm so happy to be home tonight and that I didn't get squished today.
Now I really don't think that moving a caterpillar out of my driveway this morning somehow changed my fate today and made me be in a different place than I normally would be, but you never know, do you?
