Wow ! That is a deep question here ! 
Hmmm .. I think, if I wanted anything back ... it would be a job I onced held when I was living in California. Before coming here to Massachusetts,
That job was taking care of the Beach houses up along Long Beach and Venice Beach. The money was very good. And, the women were , well .. just say " HOTT" !

if it is "something"....change your strategy. if it's "someone" well,...I would guess that it's all up to the approach and then left up to the other person!

If it is money, forget it, that won't happen, a guy borrowed money from me, never paid me back, grrrrrrrr. If it is something like a rug shampooer, I'd just ask for it back, telling them you loaned it to them, but now you need it back to do some work at your place.

you politely ask them for it
two, if they don't return it, and it is not expensive
then chalk it up to experience and KEEP The person out of your life
three, if it is expensive, ask them again and if they don't return it, tell them you are going to take them to small claims court
and four, follow through on it

If barrowed then just ask for it back, plain and simple; if given, you shouldn’t ask for it back unless they received it from you under false pretences, trickery or lies. Then by all means ask for it back!
