Friday's overnight visit with my woman-friend was (happily) uneventful. She slept better than last time, and so did I. She says I didn't snore at all (which can sometimes be a problem)...confirming that the few periods of snoring I experienced last time, were caused by an allergy about to flare up. Whew!
Better yet, she cheerfully announced that I look "cute" when I'm lying down, which means I seem like less of a threat to her now. Whatever makes her less anxious... I hate the thought of her cowering in dread all night, for fear of the terrible presence of....me.
Happily, I accomplished everything I set out to do during the visit: Checked the computer (all is well), got the DVD player working (she hadn't connected it up properly, as predicted), wagged a finger at her for overspending on useless stuff, gave her advice and got her requirements for a couple of pages I'll be typesetting for a booklet she's publishing.
Watched a couple of movies and showed her some sequences from TWIN PEAKS (a show she'd never seen) with an actor she likes. Unfortunately, it takes longer to summarize TWIN PEAKS than to watch the sequences...but she enjoyed it. I'm not quite sure in what way my visit had this effect, but she seems to have felt more energetic and self-assured after I left. (Hmmm...I guess people DO feel better once I've left the room.) I had noticed a problem with the heat in her apartment and recommended she call the building people (it wouldn't turn OFF!) but she sent me a proud e-mail on Sunday saying she'd fixed it. Then she e-mailed me frantically, saying that whenever she used the scanner on her computer, now it wanted to save things on the "left side of the computer." (This gives you an idea of why I have to come and personally troubleshoot the machine for her, every so often; she simply cannot describe the problems she has.) Then half an hour later she e-mailed me to tell me she'd figured it out. Normally these things leave her completely stymied. Sunday, she felt empowered to solve her own challenges!
The big surprise was what she had been trying to scan: she'd done a sketch of Popeye cuddling on the couch with a disrobed Betty Boop! (Dear me! What would Olive think?) This friend of mine is incredibly straight-laced, so it was hilariously startling, coming from her! I sent her some politely encouraging remarks and thought that would be the end of it. Turned out she then mailed the scan to about a dozen friends, most of 'em being members of a Christian comic book fan association to which she belongs. The drawing was not well-received, so she spent the rest of Mother's Day apologizing to a bunch of guys for sending them a picture of Betty with her boobs out.
Now I feel like I'm a bad influence on this innocent woman.

We just can't always predict how people will react to any sort of influence. Her reaction is certainly something that you could never have foreseen. Don't be so hard on yourself though. She obviously needed to expand her views a bit and she did that...it may not have had a great deal to do with you, however.
