Another bookish child here - I, too, read everything I could obtain. And it is the reading of a good book that remains perhaps the most anticipated luxury - one that even I can well afford, on my modest artist's income.
There is no difference between the perceptions created by typeset words on old, yellowing pages and all those things we see when we lift up our heads and look around us. Hmmm... except that these are perceptions created by others to share with us their vision of the universe. And each shared vision helps us see beyond whatever limitations our world may present to us.
